Bob’s Archives

Tapes from the Archive

What He Left Behind

Bob left behind a warehouse of artifacts from his decades of work including an assortment of:

  • vintage instruments
  • breadboard prototypes
  • photos
  • writings
  • project notes
  • reel-to-reel tapes
  • correspondence
  • articles by and about Bob
  • vintage R.A. Moog, Co. and Moog Music, Inc. catalogs and manuals

The Bob Moog Archive, an extensive,  historically rich and culturally significant body of materials, represents 50 years of pioneering efforts and offers a fascinating glimpse into Bob’s work, thoughts and impact.  We are committed to preserving the information in this archive for generations to come.  The materials included here will form the core of our historical exhibits at our future Moogseum.

The video below, filmed and produced with donated time by visionary videographer Paul Schattel of Harrow Beauty Pictures, details our efforts to give Bob’s archives the place in history that they deserve. Our volunteer, Wheat Williams, served as the interviewer, asking just the right questions.

Saving the Bob Moog Archives

What We’re Doing With These Treasures

Beginning in January 2007  we began preserving the archives with the assistance of volunteer Doug Babb. Over a period of several months, we sorted and prioritized the archive material and placed it in climate-controlled storage.

In October 2007 we applied for a grant from the GRAMMY Foundation to assess the 300 reel-to-reel tapes in the collection, and spent the next year studying their physical, historical and legal  viability. In March 2009  we were awarded a larger preservation grant to clean and transfer 40 of the tapes. Recording engineer and preservationist Seva David Ball of Soundcurrent Mastering and Peter Brothers at Spec Brothers will be completing the project. We hope to share some of these new discoveries with you later this year. The Bob Moog Foundation is currently seeking additional funding to assist with the archiving and preservation of the archive.

Many thanks to the GRAMMY Foundation for their ongoing support of this important project.
