Celebrate Five Years of the Moogseum on Bob Moog’s 90th Birthday

We are excited to announce that on May 23, 2024, we will celebrate five years of innovation, creativity, and inspiration at the Moogseum on what would have been Bob Moog’s 90th birthday.

To celebrate, we will introduce rare and exciting pieces of music history to the museum, launch limited edition merchandise, and host special guided tours with Executive Director, Michelle Moog-Koussa.

Newly donated items with unique historical interest from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives will be displayed at the Moogseum starting on May 23. One of the items becoming viewable to visitors of the Moogseum is Herbert Deutsch’s Melodia Theremin – the touchpoint of the Moog legacy. The instrument, introduced in 1961, was purchased in kit form and built by the Hofstra music professor and experimental jazz composer. The theremin catalyzed a chance meeting with Bob Moog in 1963, which led to Deutsch collaborating with Moog the following summer and developing the first Moog modular prototype. Deutsch’s widow, Nancy Deutsch, generously donated the culturally significant instrument, along with many other items, to the Bob Moog Foundation Archives in 2023. This will be the first time that it is displayed in public.

As part of the Moogseum’s five-year anniversary celebrations, a rare Moog muSonics Minimoog Model D synthesizer will join the Moogseum’s Bob’s Workbench exhibit.

Bob’s Workbench, one of the many exhibits at the Moogseum, will also be the beneficiary of added historical items. The updated exhibit will now host a rare Moog muSonics Minimoog Model D synthesizer previously owned by music producer Charles Stepney and donated on behalf of the previous owner, the late Philip A. DiTullio. The unique instrument represents the transition from R.A. Moog, Inc. to muSonics in 1971. The front of the instrument features the muSonics logo, while the back mentions it was built in Trumansburg, New York, meaning this specific Minimoog was likely built by R.A. Moog, Inc. but later sold by muSonics following the change in ownership and relocation of the company to Buffalo, NY. The Minimoog will sit at Bob’s Workbench alongside other significant additions.

The Moogseum’s Patching Sound exhibit will also feature new visuals and updated information about modular synthesis and its evolution, including examples of contemporary modular offerings.

Visitors will also be able to play a rare Minimoog Voyager Signature Edition, serial number 158, previously owned by the late Bill Plummer, a lauded audio engineer, Grammy nominee, and keyboardist for the band Oblivion Sun. After playing the synthesizer, guests will have the opportunity to sign a commemorative book alongside everyone else who played the instrument.

In commemoration of the museum’s five-year anniversary, the Bob Moog Foundation is offering a limited edition t-shirt featuring a modified Moogseum logo interwoven with quarter-inch plug-ins and cables in the shape of sound waves. The t-shirt will only be available for a limited time and can be purchased in person or on our online store.

Visitors of the Moogseum can also purchase tickets for a special guided tour with Michelle Moog-Koussa. During this tour, she will shed new insights on the items added to the various exhibits. There are a limited number of tickets, so purchase yours now while they are still available.

Everyone is also welcome to come together and celebrate what would have been Bob Moog’s 90th birthday by attending the Asheville City Soccer Club match against the Southern Soccer Academy Kings from Marietta, Georgia, on Friday, May 24th. During their warm-ups, Asheville City will wear commemorative Bob Moog-inspired soccer jerseys, which guests can purchase at the match. Proceeds from jersey sales will benefit the Bob Moog Foundation. The evening festivities will kick off with the National Anthem being performed by musician Robeone on a vintage Moog Liberation synthesizer provided by the Bob Moog Foundation Archives. We’re excited to announce our annual summer synth raffle, this year for a fully restored vintage Minimoog Model D signed by the legendary Billy Joel.

All ticket sales support our work inspiring future generations of innovators through the intersection of science, music, and technology.

The raffle for this vintage beauty signed by one of the most beloved and best-selling American musicians of all time begins on August 1, 2022 at 12:01 a.m. ET, and ends on August 31, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. ET, or when all 5,000 tickets sell out – whichever comes first.

Tickets are $25 each, or five for $100, 12 for $200, and 35 for $500, and can be purchased below.

Funds raised from the annual raffle are used to grow our hallmark educational project, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool. The SoundSchool has inspired nearly 25,000 elementary school students nationwide through the science of sound, stimulating critical thinking using a curriculum based in Bob’s lifework.

The raffle also supports the Moogseum, our immersive, experiential museum in Asheville, NC, which brings Bob Moog’s pioneering legacy – and the science of sound and synthesis – alive for visitors of all ages.

The Minimoog raffled in 2022 isn’t just signed by an icon: It belonged to Joel’s musical director, a musician of note in his own right – keyboardist, synth programmer, and orchestrator David Rosenthal, formerly of Rainbow, who has toured with Cyndi Lauper, Robert Palmer, and Enrique Iglesias, programmed synths for Bruce Springsteen, and also worked with Happy the Man, Steve Vai and Red Dawn.

Rosenthal used the Minimoog as part of his early ‘80s Rainbow touring rig, and the raffle also includes the original road case from his rock ‘n’ roll Rainbow years as a twentysomething playing Madison Square Garden.

The left-hand control panel on this Minimoog was modified to use a ribbon controller and modulation wheel, identical to that of a Micromoog. Its original left-hand controller, with the standard pitch and modulation wheels, was preserved, and will be sent to the winner.

The estimated value of the instrument, even without the signature of a celebrated musician, is in excess of $10,000.

This unit’s serial number is 8486. It was final-tested on Jan 17, 1977. Besides the pitch ribbon update described above, this unit also has the version 3 oscillator update. This oscillator upgrade would not have been installed in the factory until roughly 1979/80, and was a special-order option for those with earlier production units who wanted rock-solid tuning.

Due to the desirability of this classic synth, its signature from Billy Joel, and rock ‘n’ roll provenance with David Rosenthal and Rainbow, it will only increase in value. This Minimoog was fully restored by Synthpro Restorations, LLC, and is in excellent technical and physical condition, with minor physical flaws commensurate with the age of the instrument.

It is renowned for its robust bass and lead sounds, which are rooted in its three voltage-controlled oscillators (one of which can be used as a low-frequency oscillator) and its legendary filters. The Minimoog uses a 4-pole (24 dB/octave) low-pass filter with cutoff, resonance, ADS envelope, and keyboard tracking controls. To this day, Moog’s filter design is widely regarded as the standard to which all others are compared.

Bob could not have achieved his pioneering work without Herb’s ongoing careful guidance and insight, starting with their work together in the summer of 1964, and lasting for decades thereafter. We hope the lucky winner of this Minimoog will be deeply inspired by this rare piece of history.”

The Minimoog featured is serial number 11,535, built at Moog Music’s Cheektowaga, NY factory during the late 1970s. It has an estimated value of $10,000. Due to the highly-coveted nature of this archetypical synthesizer, and the iconic signature from Herb Deutsch, it is likely to only increase in value.

This Minimoog has been meticulously restored by revered synthesizer technician Wes Taggart of Analogics, who also crafted its new custom walnut cabinet enclosure. It is in excellent technical and physical condition.

We are thrilled to share that former Earth, Wind & Fire keyboardist Larry Dunn will live stream from the Foundation’s Facebook page  on Thursday, May 21st, at 7pm (ET) 4pm (PT) as part of the Foundation’s Moogmentum in Place, a series of live stream events celebrating Bob Moog’s birthday and the one year anniversary of the Moogseum, both of which fall on May 23rd. Dunn will be delving into his longtime use of the Minimoog, both playing, and discussing his experiences with industry insider Jerry Kovarsky, as well as taking questions from the audience. 

“Larry Dunn is a giant, gifted talent and a musical legend,” noted Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Foundation. “The music he has helped create has brought joy and inspiration to generations of musicians and music enthusiasts. We are deeply honored to have him live streaming to benefit the important work of the Bob Moog Foundation.”

LARRY’S ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER

With his soulful keyboard playing, arranging and composing, Larry Dunn helped transform Earth, Wind & Fire into one of the all-time most successful R&B bands in the world, with sales of more than 100 million albums worldwide, 7 GRAMMYs, 13 GRAMMY nominations, 4 American Music Awards, 32 Gold & Platinum/Multi-Platinum records and albums, a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2000) and Songwriters Hall of Fame (2010), the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award (2016), recipients of the Smithsonian Museum’s “Portrait of a Nation Prize” and Kennedy Center Honors (2019).

In addition to playing organ, synthesizer, piano and clavinet with the group from 1972 until 1983, Dunn held the position and handled the responsibilities of the band’s Musical Director, and was one of the group’s main composers. Dunn’s major creative influence can be heard in such Earth, Wind, & Fire classics as “Shining Star,” “Spirit,” ‘Be Ever Wonderful,” “Runnin’,” “See The Light,”, “Let Me Talk,” “And Love Goes On,” “Jupiter,’ and his personal favorite, the arrangement he and Maurice White created for the Beatles classic “Got to Get You Into My Life”. 

“I have been playing Moog since 1972 at 18 years old and it changed my entire musical life,” noted Dunn. “Robert Moog was an undeniable GENIUS!”

His production and performance credits include: The Emotions, Level 42, Ronnie Laws, George Duke, Lenny White, Paulinho Da Costa, Foley, Ramsey Lewis, Caldera, Hubert Laws, Stanley Turrentine, Dianne Reeves, Brian Culbertson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stanley Clarke, and Deniece Williams. Since 1988, Dunn, along with his wife Luisa, are part of Source Productions, and have focused on producing and writing music together.

The Bob Moog Foundation is thrilled that composer, musician, and sound designer Michael Whalen will be presenting a Facebook live stream concert, Painting With Synthesizers, with insights, inspiration, and Q&A on Sunday, May 17, 2020 at 4pm (ET) /1pm (PT).  The event is part of the Foundation’s Moogmentum In Place, a month-long series of musical fundraising events celebrating Bob Moog’s birthday and the one-year anniversary of the Moogseum, both occurring on May 23rd. 

Whalen will broadcast live from his New York City production studio, surrounded by a stunning array of synthesizers and keyboards, including a Minimoog, Moog One, Moog modular System 15, and three Mother 32s. The hour-long event will be a combination of performance and insights into his composition and sound design process. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and to donate to the Foundation through Facebook or Paypal during the event. 

“I love talking about using synthesizers as sound design tools. We’ll play with some synths and then I’ll do my best to answer your questions,” notes Whalen. 

Michael Whalen is a two-time Emmy® award winner, BMI award winner, and Grammy-nominated composer and music supervisor. A veteran of more than 800 TV and film scores, thousands of commercials, and numerous TV themes and video games, Michael is also a world-renown recording artist and producer, with 33 solo and soundtrack recordings to his credit. His song, “I Have Loved You For A Thousand Lifetimes” has more than 37,000,000 streams on Spotify and over 100,000 views on YouTube. Known for his beautiful melodies and gorgeous textures, Michael is also an expert on music copyrights and music monetization, and is a noted speaker on the future of the music business. He has been adjunct professor at four major universities, and is published by Warner/Chappell Music as well as being a Yamaha artist. 

He recently released a new ambient album, Sacred Spaces, which was lauded by John Diliberto of the respected Echoes podcast as the CD of the month for April, with Diliberto noting, “….The opening track weaves cyclical synth melodies, carrying you though a gallery of sound. Flutes flutter and evolve into pianos, all the while, sequences spiral left and right in syncopation. An overhead photo of his studio shows that Whalen has an insane number of synthesizers, and he must have used them all on Sacred Spaces. “
