The 10-week innovative curriculum is taught by public school teachers trained by the Foundation in both the science of sound and the pedagogy involved in teaching the program. In addition to professional development training, teachers receive bins of materials and scores of online assets to assist them in their teaching.

To deliver the most streamlined, sophisticated, accessible user interface portal for the various online assets, which includes videos, apps, diagrams, documents, sound samples, and more, the Foundation looked to MusicFirst, working together to create a customized portal through which teachers have supplementary materials at their fingertips to enrich the teaching and learning experience.

Lee Sebel, the Foundation’’s Online Education Coordinator, managed the project. Sebel combined his lengthy experience in the music technology industry with his training in online education methods to create an optimal portal for Dr. Bob’’s SoundSchool teachers. According to Sebel, “”As a specialist in distance learning best practices, I’m always looking for the most efficient solutions when it comes to delivering online content. Not only does the MusicFirst platform fully support this goal, it provides considerable potential for expanding online learning opportunities for Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool in the future.””

Virtuoso synthesist Erik Norlander and his band The Galactic Collective perform a benefit tribute concert for the Bob Moog Foundation with three very special guests: fully restored vintage instruments from the Bob Moog Foundation Archives, including a 1967 Moog Modular, an early Minimoog Model D, and an extremely rare Moog Apollo.

Michelle Moog-Koussa, executive director of the Bob Moog Foundation, notes, “The convergence of the Moog modular, the Minimoog, and the Moog Apollo in one performance is nearly unprecedented. Not since Keith Emerson toured with a prototype Apollo in the early ’70s have they been heard together in live performance, making the Tribute to Dr. Bob concert in Asheville on Thursday a historic occasion.”

The 1967 R. A. Moog Co. Modular is an iconic synth on permanent loan from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. It was built for the first electronic music studio in the state, and hand delivered by Bob Moog.

The Minimoog was donated to the Foundation by Asheville composer and arranger Tom Coppola, who used it to record the signature three-note “Duracell sound.” The Minimoog was the first mass-produced commercially available synthesizer that the working musician could afford.

The priceless Moog Apollo is one of the few of its kind in the world. This model is a newly and fully restored 1974 instrument that served as a prototype for the Polymoog. The Apollo is one of the earliest polyphonic synths, synthesizers that could play more than one note at a time.

“We take that for granted in 2014, but in the early ’70s, this was real innovation,” said Norlander. ”The Apollo is an uncompromising feat of musical majesty. Every note that it sounds speaks volumes. And the build quality, from the switches down to the actual key bed, is equally uncompromised, a real musical instrument and true to the legacy of Bob Moog.”

Opening for the band will be Drew Heller, the guitarist for Toubab Krewe, joined by his father, Grammy award winning producer/composer Steven Heller. Tickets are $18, with proceeds benefiting Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, the Foundation’s hallmark educational project.

The Galactic Collective is a re-imagining of Norlander’s favorite instrumental songs written for his band Rocket Scientists and his wife and collaborator, Lana Lane.

He is an accomplished keyboardist and composer who has produced over 30 albums. He has toured and recorded as the keyboardist and co-writer for the Asia spinoff, Asia Featuring John Payne, since 2007 and has also toured extensively with Big Noize, a hard rock supergroup featuring Joe Lynn Turner, Vinny Appice and other rock luminaries.

Norlander has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Bob Moog Foundation since 2007, including performing the benefit Moogus Operandi at Asheville’s Orange Peel in 2011.

Norlander comments, “Bob Moog brought a new voice to the musical landscape, and our musical vernacular would be very different without his enduring contribution. The name ‘Moog’ is synonymous with art, science and innovation, and as a keyboardist and synthesist, I can think of no greater tribute than using Bob’s timeless inventions as the core instruments in my own craft. “

Steven Heller was a longtime friend and colleague of Bob Moog. Heller has won two Grammy Awards, as well as a number of national awards for his music and recordings. He was production music supervisor for the 1995 Miramax film “The Journey of August King,” and wrote and produced the theme music for “Conversations” and “Evening Rounds,” listener call-in programs on the public radio station WCQS.

Steven’s son Drew Heller tours nationally with Afro-fusion band Toubab Krewe as its guitarist. Toubab Krewe’s first album was released in 2005, around the time that Bob Moog was critically ill. The band’s exceptional musicianship left him sonically inspired.

Moog’s 80th birthday would have been May 23.

On the eve of Bob’s 80th birthday, musical acts converge in an evening of celebration and reverence for Bob’s enduring legacy of inspiration though sonic exploration. We are grateful to all of the musicians involved for making this possible.

The Isis Music Hall, located at 743 Haywood Road in West Asheville, prides itself on a high-quality audio experience. Dinner service begins at 5pm each evening. Diners may come any time before the show begins.

In late October 2013, the Bob Moog Foundation traveled to Houston, Texas to present a Dr. Bob’s Workshop experience to Cornelius Elementary, the math, science, and technology magnet schools in the Houston school system. The experience was made possible through a donation by our strategic partner, Disco Donnie Presents and their Halloween based festival, Something Wicked.

During the one day experience, ten classes of fourth grade students explored the history and impact of the theremin and synthesizer, and experienced the instruments first hand.

Below, Michelle Moog-Koussa gets the kids thinking about the expansive sonic landscape before they play the instruments.

We are proud to announce that Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool has been introduced into the Madison County School District in Western North Carolina. Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool (DBSS), the Foundation’s hallmark educational project, is a 10-week experiential curriculum that teaches second graders the science of sound through the magic of music. Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool is also taught in Asheville City Schools and Buncombe County Schools.

The DBSS curriculum teaches second grade students the physics of sound using acoustic and electronic musical instruments such as the theremin, as well as oscilloscopes and custom educational materials and processes developed by the Bob Moog Foundation educational team. Through DBSS, students gain a thorough understanding of vibrations, waveforms, sound travel and parameters of sound such as pitch/frequency and loudness/amplitude.

Madison County Schools, a progressive school district serving a rural, high poverty area northwest of Asheville, NC, embraced the science curriculum across all second grade classes. Madison County Schools taught the curriculum to the students beginning in August of 2013 and will be presenting the Madison County Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool Grande Finale at the Orange Peel on October 31st, demonstrating what the children have learned through song, poetry and other theatrical medium.

Dr. Jonna Kwiatkowski, the Curriculum Research Coordinator for DBSS (a volunteer position), serves as a professor of psychology at Mars Hill Univerisity, specializing in creativity and assessments. Dr. Kwiatkowski is responsible for overseeing the development of the curriculum to meet state and national standards. For the Madison County expansion, she solicited the assistance of an intern from Mars Hill, who has assisted the teachers with the curriculum and will be assisting Dr. Kwiatkowski with assessment data.

Michelle Begnino, Assistant Curriculum Director for Madison County Schools, states “We are so pleased with the experience our children and teachers have had working with Dr. Bob’s Sound School and with Mars Hill University, which has supported assessment data and an intern assistant for the program. The excitement our children radiate when talking about the DBSS lessons will be on full display Thursday at the Orange Peel. As we focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) throughout our district, this curriculum gives teachers the chance to implement lessons that have the rigor and the support to be successful! We have tremendously bright children in our system of high poverty and DBSS gives our children wonderful, hands-on learning opportunities and a chance to shine.”

Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Bob Moog Foundation, reflects on the growth of Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool into Madison County, “The Bob Moog Foundation is proud to partner with Madison County School district to bring its teachers and children our innovative curriculum, which helps enlighten students to the basic physics of sound in the early stages of their science education. The administration, teachers, and students have enthusiastically embraced teaching and learning the material, and by all reports it has been a great success with the students.”

Madison County will celebrate the conclusion of Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool with a Grand Finale event at the Orange Peel, a popular music venue in downtown Asheville, on the morning of October 31, 2013. The event takes place from 10am -11:30 and is open to the public.

The post Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool Expands to Rural Madison County first appeared on The Bob Moog Foundation.
