About

Bob Moog (1934-2005): A Legacy of Innovation

Few people have impacted electronic music like Bob Moog. His invention of the Moog synthesizer in 1964 revolutionized nearly every genre of music, empowering musicians from the Grateful Dead to Daft Punk to explore new sonic landscapes and discover unknown sounds.

His impact on recorded and live music has changed how we listen to and experience our favorite artists and musicians–forever.

💫Mission

The Bob Moog Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization inspires creative thinking by providing interactive educational experiences at the intersection of science, music, history, and innovation.

Motivated by and in appreciation of Bob Moog’s legacy, we offer unique programs that inspire creativity, encourage problem-solving skills, and spark imagination. We cultivate these essential aptitudes by providing innovative instruments and interactive experiences.

These hands-on opportunities for science-of-sound exploration occur in Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool and at the Moogseum in downtown Asheville, North Carolina. They also are accessible online and via traveling exhibits.

💫 Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool: Developing the next generation of innovators

Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool is the hallmark project of the Bob Moog Foundation, an experiential 10-week curriculum teaching second-graders the physics of sound using acoustic and electronic musical instruments. It uses the theremin, technological tools like oscilloscopes, and custom educational materials developed by the Bob Moog Foundation.

This unique curriculum empowers teachers and prepares them to teach the physics of sound to second graders. Often, we aren’t only teaching children, but their parents and instructors as well.

Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool stats:

  • Serves 3,000 students every year, delivering 30,000 individual lessons in over 100 classrooms
  • Has served over 23,000 students in the past 10 years, delivering 230,000 individual lessons
  • Over 250 teachers trained in the science of sound
