sir-
I was present, as a band-member, at the nearfest event in 2008 when michelle shared news of the existence of this tape archive. I was frustrated at having to cross the atlantic back to the UK, unable to stay & offer assistance with this project- I am, aswell as a moog user, something of an audio archivist myself, & have spent many years restoring & transferring from tape.
so…. I am extremely glad to hear that the project is going well, & I look forward to hearing the results. one wonders if the publication might be modelled after the “manhattan research” package, which so elegantly showed us the world of raymond scott.
best-
duncan.
Amazing history! Article describes Herb Deutsch, the man who not only introduced me to my first Moog Synthesizer, but also was instrumental in its invention and design! (no pun intended!) Herb was my band director at St. Agnes Cathedral High School while, at same time, a professor at Hofstra University on Long Island. I reconnected with Herb just a few years ago, after 37 years. My partner, Jim, also got to pick his brain, as we were mid-construction on our recording studio here at our home. Shortly after, we got to see Herb once again, in person in NYC, as he was awarded one of the first Bob Moog Lifetime Achievement Awards at MoogFest. Thank you, Herb, for all the influence you have had on my life!
Hi,
You could just post the audio files on this blog, so we can hear it.

Hi Dana,
We’re facing some server issues that are limiting our uploads. We’re working on that right now, and hoping to have some samples up soon. The tape is truly amazing!
Thanks,
The Bob Moog Foundation
Thanks for this. “Forgotten tomorrows and imagined pasts” seem to be what our culture is all about these days…
ahhhh, excellent!!!
all my appreciation

Great post. Would enjoy reading a follow up post.

thanx fjor this opportunity!

Huzzah, BOB!
Hi everybody. What a great event with Erik Norlander performing. How would I get some Moog Filtered Ale seeing that I live in the Oakland/S.F. Bay area in California? Thank you very much..Douglas James
Hi Michelle!
Hi! Thanks for the great info. I will be back to see another post!
Hi Douglas,
You can order through Bruisin’ Ales. They are distributing nationally and internationally for us. Check them out at http://www.bruisin‘-ales.com. They’ll have the beer starting May 31st.
Great to hear from you. Gotta get you some of our info — you are on my to-do list for sure! Hang in there with me!
Michelle
This list sure has a lot of amazing names on it!! I’m so jealous I won’t see this….
Erik, Michelle and hardworking crew
Some people like to see pyramids and temples. Others prefer fancy cars or boats.
But me, I just love walls of gear and this thing is a beauty!
Thank you for sharing it with the world and continued success to you.
Amin Bhatia
Hi Douglas!
You can get MFA from http://www.bruisin-ales.com. Go to their shipping link for instructions.
We will also be producing a CD/DVD combination of Moogus Operandi. That should be out in a few months! It was a fantastic event and we’ll look forward to sharing it with everybody!
Take care!
Michelle
I was there. I (as usual) carried in my good frend Mike Abbott’s equipment and was in awe that I got to meet Bob and to hear him play.
Hats off to Dan for bringing this historical moment in time to the forefront. I believe this will be a ‘got to have’ recording for all electronic musicians.
For additional information about the “Bob Moog Live” CD,
visit http://www.reverbnation.com/bobmooglive
Who did the original recordings.
i like tangerine dream or kraft werk and other stuff . what is this cd about the synth or the music? thanx from yianni
Dan Lewis and Mike Abbot did the recordings.
Really more about the music, which has lots of synths in it!
Hello, just doing some research for my PRS Guitars site. Truly more information than you can imagine on the web. Wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but very nice site. Take care.
Very poignant and exceptionally well done! If emotional expression is the very essence of what it means to be human, then the creators of the instruments of that expression should be exalted above any works of poets and theologians…
Awesome, Brian! I forwarded this post to Roger.
Very groovy pics and story, my friend!
Cheers
Guido
This collection is fantastic! Thanks Brian for an excellent compilation!
Thanks for the great memories. I saw ELP in concert several times in the 70’s, and was always blown away by the Moog sound. I actually purchased a Systec Phaser for my guitar in the late 70’s from Greg Hockman, and was my first introduction to Greg. We became friends over the years, and I really enjoyed reading about Greg, & Brother Mark.
My best, Mike Borne-Allstar Audio-Nashville
WOW!!!!!
Awesome pics!!!!
great pics and story ! thankyou
Why is there still nothing on the contest published yet? It is already March 16 and still nothing.
Hi Slash,
Spectrasonics has been working around the clock to get the contest, and everything that will go in to it, ready. It’s more complex than you might think……..sorry that we can’t say more right now.
The word from Spectrasonics at this point is that the contest (an all of the rest) will be launched tomorrow morning (PDT). We promise, it will be worth the wait!
GREAT to see Shirleigh here and contributing to the historical knowledge. She has such a part in the Moog story – going all the way back to the 1950s and 60s Moog catalogs and kits! I hope to see/hear more from her around here…
That last picture is begging for a caption contest! Bob was a great man, and his work was “damn good.” His work changed my life from the moment I heard the first tones of “Popcorn’ as a child playing through my parents’ record colletction. Bob forever!
Brilliant. I miss you Bob..
I met Bob in 1969 in San Francisco. I had access to and performed with one of the only portable Moogs in the world. Beaver & Kraus had one in a studio in LA, there was Bruce Hatch’s one which I performed on, and later one that was at the Heliport in Sausalito in the mid ’70s. Bob was such a sweet guy and I was thrilled to meet him and have his encouragement with my performing.
I would love to share my library of music with you from that era.
Get in touch if you’re interested.

Happy birthday to Bob and best wishes to his family and foundation!
That is just precious. “My goal is to be enlightened and respected member of my community”. Just so dear.
Belated birthday wishes to a brilliant pioneer. And many thanks to his family and the Foundation for sharing this wonderful letter. It appears the young Mr Moog was well set on his course to success, having the desires, dreams and dedication necessary to make it happen.
Will this Be mass produced, and if so, when will it be available for purchase?
Michelle –
This is an exciting development! I’m really looking forward to seeing what Marc comes up with.
I hope there will be time for Marc to give the world another sneak preview of some of the items in the archives, too.
I worked at the Moog plant in Williamsville, NY when I was 19 and was a Mini assembler…I forget how many I put together but I know I signed my full name to number 5000! I learned so much while there, from the geniuses that worked for Mr. Moog (pronounced MOGE, as he himself stressed to me when I asked him about that!)
to Keith Emerson, for whom whom I was honored to have fixed his mod rack. Everybody was very friendly there and most knew they were working ina factory, yes, but the most important factory on Earth…the one that created these monster music-making machines. I only wish they had marketed the top-secret digital piano that was being developed…I wonder where the working prototype is that we used to sneak into that back room to play ended up?? Thanks, Bob, wherever you are.
Marc, what an honor to be able to hold a Moog notebook! Small world indeed – in 1977 I also held ELO’s record sleeve pondering over what a Minimoog was – because I knew I loved that sound. My father had ‘Switched on Bach’ and a number of other Moog fueled records. Hope you enjoy your stay in Moog-land. Keep up the great work on your “automaticgainsay” channel!
amazing. thanks for sharing this. its crazy to see how early those artists were down for obtaining some moog in their lives; these heavyweights mustve all had similar visions of the endless possibilities this new type of instrument would allow. real dope.
respect to the bob moog foundation and good luck with the mooglab development as well.
Hi James,
We are thrilled to have Marc here. He’s quiet an asset to our efforts. Yes, Marc has plans to do a sneak preview of some items from the archives before he leaves.
Thanks always for your support and interest in our efforts!
Gene Felice, an amazing artist and fantastic friend!
Keep up the spectacular work~
Yummy.
Bob looks considerably less eccentric in that photo that in some of his later pictures. LOL
Looking forward to the opening of the Moogseum. I will do all that I can to help.
Big fan of Marc’s videos. Looking forward to watching the stuff he records at Moog Foundation.
Any restrictions? Canadians allowed to enter?
Hi Jake,
Thanks for asking. There are no restrictions. And yes, the competition is open worldwide. We love our neighbors up North!
Good Vibes,

Terrific! Saw her doing “Rocket Wife” in Leamington Spa, supporting John Foxx & The Maths. A daunting delight!
C’mon! I bought my 6.
Hurry up and get your friends to buy! I want to win… and also support the foundation of course.
Bought 6. That’s a lot of hardware/software for the money. Support the BMF!
Good luck everyone!
(Just in case someone official reads these, I accidentally hid my email address during my Google Checkout. I did send a change request adding my email address, but I never got a response or confirmation.)
and the winners are?
Have the winners been announced yet? I haven’t seen anything here or on facebook. (I realize it was drawn on the 24th.)
Is the raffle over? Who won?
Did i win!?
Hi Stephanie,
Your new address has been noted!
Thanks,
The BMF team
Hi Brian,
The winners were announced on October 28, the day Moogfest started, on Facebook. Thomas Erzberger and Damon Harris were the winners. We have confirmed with Damon, but we haven’t been able to get in touch with Thomas, so we’ve hesitated posting a blog on the subject. We are still trying to get in touch with him to confirm his win!
Thank you,
The BMF Team

As I have discussed with Brian Kehew in a separate email, I have located composer Dick Robinson, who is alive and well and living in Atlanta. After the new year I’m going to interview him and report my findings to Brian.
I was searching for information on pilot training programs in other countries and somehow ended up at this page on your website! Proves that the mighty Google is not as good as everyone seems to assume it is! Anyways… nice website… take care! 🙂
Just curious who won the Moogfest Voyager, I wasnt notified and I thought surely I would win.
Hi Mike,
Scott Edwards of Johanasburg, South Africa won the Voyager. We posted the announcement on Facebook, Twitter and in our blog on March 5th here:
https://moogfoundation.org/2012/announcing-moogfest-voyager-and-moogfest-vip-package-winners/.
Thanks so much for participating! We’ll be doing another raffle of the same sort next year. Keep your eye out for it in November.
🙂
Hi. In 1975, as a recent graduate of SU, I interviewed with Bob for an electronic engineer position. He and another took me to lunch at a Friendly’s nearby the small factory in upstate NY. What a great day that was to meet him and see where these synths were built as I was a huge fan of Moog synths and electronic music and wanted to make a career of it. Prior to that memorable event, I had the privilage to play the synth in JC Superstar for 3 weeks in Syracuse. I also taught some middle schoolers in Syracuse for a one day synth class. That was fun. I wish I could join in your breakfast, but it’s too far away. What you’re doing with this foundation is great. Keep up the great work. -Mike

?- I remember this – Namm in Anaheim, the first year the Liberation was released. – I was there working for MOOG. There is a picture of me playing it as well in Downbeat Magazine during the show. BTW – That prototype was noticeably heavier than the ones that were finally produced.
moog liberation it is….moog has been the godfather of synths technology…till date moog has delivered its products to the finest…
love nd respect to BOB MOOG……

Diggin’ the lineup this year! I suppose my only thought in question is the typo I noticed…Die Antwoord…I’m not seeing them on the list, which is confusing to me because they are in the area at the perfect time to align with Moagfest!??
Thanks,

A clear, readable report, with encouraging conclusions–very heartening to read, documenting a fine accomplishment for the BMF. Congratulations!
Bob Moog was and is an inspiration. I can only hope that I lead a life that inspires invention and expression a percentage of what Mr Moog inspires in those I know. Thanks for keeping his dream alive!
I have just purchased a winter hat but the discount code only applied 10% rather than the 20% that was promised in this email.
Was wondering was this at last year’s (2001) Moog Festival in Asheville? I’ve been looking for a date and don’t see one on any of the packaging or material. You know, some of us nerds are picky about things like that, LOL. Appreciate if someone knows and can give me an answer! awwa1@yahoo.com Thanks, Alan W.
Oops, that would be, “last year’s (2011) Moog Festival!” Sorry.
Will the raffle winner and the winnig bids for the LPs be published?
The panels were good. The Shaping Hits with Moog Synths panel seemed to drift a bit. Would have liked to hear more from Chad Hugo.
Un instrumento por si solo, solo es un mueble, la magia esta en la mente del hombre canalizada por sus ejecuciones.
Me encantaría plasmar mis sueños en una de estos muebles musicales.
Moog Rocks!!
Such a truly extraordinary opportunity you are offering in this raffle here; thank you for extending the opportunity to participate in this exciting & unique event! My sincere best wishes to all at the Bob Moog Foundation for creating & sponsoring this thrilling contest, & for offering so generously to donate this technologically significant musical machinery. Very good luck to all bidders, ticket-holders, & fellow contestants here; may the luckiest person win & create some compelling new sonic works with the awarded prize. J. K.
Hello to all hard working persons at the Bob Moog Foundation, HATS OFF to each of you !
I am very grateful to feel a part of the Moog family with my purchase of a 50th Anniversary Voyager, (one of 100 that were hand signed by Bob).. My partner and I have visited with the folks at the Moog factory on 3 occasions and have always bought something directly from the factory floor, be it upgrade kits for the Voyager or the Etherwave…..
I was privileged to give my FIRST synthesizer symposium at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for a composition class a few years back to students and faculty. I took some photos of the class AND some on another visit to the electronic music lab where an expanded model 15 was kept… I would be VERY happy to donate some high resolution photos to the foundation for it’s use and to help to keep the work of Bob Moog alive !
Repectfully,

Thanks to Bob Moog and the amazing vision he had of the world, and mostly, this foundation!
Cheers!
Hi, I am looking for a contact address for Marc Doty. I would like to send him a copy of my new CD which contains a ton of analog synths. Please reply to me at: mike@mikemyersmusic.com

Always been a big fan of Moog products, ever since hearing “Switched On Bach” in elementary school. I still use a Lab Series amp for guitar.
Hi Michelle,
I sent an email back in January and again this week about bring the SoundSchool to my city. Could you provide some more information as to the SoundSchool program and how I can bring this to my community? Thank you!
Boy, did this post take me back! It was in about 1969 that I too was exposed to Switched-On Bach in a high school music class, and I was hooked. I ended up at Dartmouth, where composer and professor Jon Appleton (and guest composer Lauren Levy from Columbia) offered courses in electronic music in the Bregman Electronic Music Studio in the basement of one of Dartmouth Row’s buildings. The Moog synth, consoles and tape decks took up most of the roughly 15′ x 30′ room, and it was a music geek’s fantastic playground. I wish I knew how to retrieve tapes of my compositions from those two engaging courses, one of which was a piece of musique concrete made up from samples of the vibrating bed spring in my dorm room. On one field trip our class visited Bell Labs, where Max Matthews was working on voice synthesis, and the music studio at Columbia University, and we had dinner that night at Matthews’ house, where his friend, composer Vladimir Ussachevsky, serenaded us on the piano. Just incredible…While I didn’t pursue a musical career (talked out of that by my more practical parents), I’ve always loved electronic and all other forms of contemporary “serious” music and recall how liberating the creativity inspired by my Dartmouth musical experience was. I look forward to the eventual opening of the Moogseum in Asheville.
For me it was early 70’s, ELP Pictures at an Exhibition, Rick Wakeman six wives. Started electronics 6th grade. By end of 70’s was building divider organs, Modular systems for friends ( I never could afford to build for myself) – discretes, CEM chips etc. 30 years later I have resurected my electronics to show my kids. Bought a Moog Opus 3 on Ebay last week and serviced it by removing the decomposing foam – aka tar, removed the sliders and cleaned them. And the Moog Opus 3 is a divider organ ! I am having a blast !!
Peter,
I just heard the orchestral version of Pictures at an Exhibition again a couple days ago. The themes in it are some of the best melodies in classical music and they translate really well into other types o music.
I was a “Six Wives” fan too. I remember reaching a turning point in my life when one day I realized that I liked my keyboard setup better than Wakeman’s shown in the center panels of the album art.
Glad to hear you are diving back into electronics. Sounds like it’s time to build yourself a modular.
Great series of memories. Having recently dusted off an old copy of easypc (Dos CGA graphics) PCB design software and made a few digital boards for Arduino style Midi controllers, I realized that once you get past bread boarding and strip board, PCB design and manufacture is going to be part of your electronics experience. Looking at modern electronics I can see that todays youth would never think they could make something like that yet looking at 70’s gear with no surface mount and .1″ pin spacing you can show that it is quite easy with todays laser printers and photo sensitive pcb boards and the same tech can be used to make T shirt silk screens…
I can’t recall where I first heard electronic music, but still have many many audio clips in memory of parts from soundtracks, radio play of songs and commercials: assorted sci fi soundtracks, Dr Who, “Telstar”, “Good Vibrations”, local Byrzynski’s bakery commercial from Bufflalo, 7up commercial [ filament in green lightbulb flicking, seemingly in time to synthesizer track], all throughout the 60’s and early 70’s. No clear idea on when I was “introduced” to Switched on Bach in the era when it was introduced, but later on found a copy in the mid 70’s college library of Wendy(Walter) Carlos version of Clockwork Orange and was blown away by the long form version of “Timesteps”, having listened to the mainstream soundtrack dozens of times over. Most vivid memory though was attending an arranged concert circa 1969 at McMaster University with my junior school. Hamilton Philharmonic, someone from the University with what would likely have been a Moog P3 connected to a computer(!) and a local hippie-pop-vocal group Tranquility Base (yes moon landing referenced). We were treated to three versions of the same composition interpreted by each ensemble. Seminal moment but I had been a keen observer for years of sounds of this class of instruments. Even though we were close to Moog in Bufflalo (I had no idea), as you had mentioned street addresses to reach out to get information on synthesizers was not readily available. It took years to lay hands on anything tangible to explain their inner workings. Our TV was dead for about a year forcing me to embrace the public library but pickings were slim and not up to date, mostly “music concrete”, Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis. To only be able to read and not hear examples of the music and composers being described was excruciating, let alone not being able to reach out beyond the boring home organs in the neighbourhood and see such machines in person.
I had a chance to study with Dr. Bob back in the early 80s at the University of North Carolina Asheville. What an amazing guy and mentor. His approach to teaching was like additive synthesis…start with a basic idea and build on to that. What a great honor for a great man.
I just got a Micromoog last week ( Serial No: 3463) and I love it more than anything! What Bob Moog did for all of us electronic music nerds is incredible. I’ll be forever grateful for his contribution. Wishing you all the best with your foundation, and I can’t wait for the Moogseum!
Sincerely,
Ivaylo
Michelle,
I am the lady at your Symphony Guild presentation that said she would contact you about a possible Musical Feast including Dr. Bob’s Sound School. i could not find a direct email to you, but will call you at the foundation number about the possibility
I hope this will work!!

Great blog and great read. I look forward to future installments.
I’m very happy to hear about this. Considering that Bob Moog has often been written about in history books for decades, this is appropriate and long overdue. Moog will always be the first name in electronic music.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am working at the Vienna Museum of Technology on electronic musical instruments. In that context I am interested in any material about the Max Brand synthesizer (I know the Austrian materiai). Are there additional documents at the Moog archives related to Max Band? Is it possible to get copies?
Best regards
To Mr. Stack,
This was truly a great read and inspiration in itself. Thank you, and keep pushing forward.
Jay
That was a great read!
FYI: The Trip soundtrack was recorded in late april/early may 1967, probably right after Zodiac: Cosmic sounds.
http://www.mikebloomfieldamericanmusic.com/boots01.htm
Re the soundtrack to Point Blank;; I’m pretty sure it wasn’t released on vinyl back in the day. Anyways, I’m not so sure that Beaver used the Moog on that score. I just listened to the CD again and to my ears the electronic parts could just as well have been made with a Hammond Novachord (Beaver had several modified Novachords) which was sort of a primitive polyphonic synthesizer. I haven’t seen the movie so I don’t know if the Moog was used for sound effects though. Bernie Krause once told me that Beaver usuually worked on the music side of things while he worked on special effexts.
keep up the good work
regards,
Mikael

I love such great stories, thanks!
I read this story and was SO happy to learn that Roger’s Moog built controller has come ‘home’ ((O:
The VU meter is a neat usability feature that I’m surprised isn’t seen on modern MIDI controllers (or none that I’m aware of, at least).
Is it still usable as a controller? I mean, is it putting out voltages?
Actually, Perrey & Kingsley’s single “The Savers” came from their 1967 Vanguard Records album “Kaleidoscopic Vibrations”. It clearly states on the LP record label that the copyright date is 1967.
Records in the Moog Archives show that Perrey & Kingsley had the SECOND modular Moog instrument ever sold — sold to Carroll Music, who was Perrey’s New York sponsor.

Do you guys plan to restore it and make it playable?
I worked with Mr. Powell on a Moog clinic back in the mid 70s. Here’s his system (with the keyboard controller):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23461646@N03/2577456109/
BTW, he was a great guy!
What a great story! I have always been a big Roger Powell fan. His donation of the controller truly displays his character and love for Bob Moog and his contributions to our world. I believe that Willie Wilcox’s Motorcycle drum kit was also destroyed in the fire that took the two modulars.
Nice work, Thom but I don’t hear any Moog on Electric Flag’s ‘Fine Jung Thing’. Could you point out where it appears?
Cheers
Jim
Great article; nice to not just hear the story behind the finding of the controller but the story behind ‘the making of’ the controller — and any story that features Roger Powell is a winner in my Muirsical book…
Cool… I bet that must have been a Moog that terrified me as a child ~ those eerie ambient winds, noise and scary clanging sounds in Yuri’s mother’s funeral piece in the Dr. Zhivago soundtrack!
Roger Powell a synthesizer legend and a nice guy.
A little disappointed you didn’t mention more about Franklin Morris. He installed a multitude of Moog modules into what was one of the most extensive instruments in the country in the 1970’s at Syracuse. An important adjunct to the synthesizer itself was the addition of patch bays which kept it all neat and tidy, much like Frank himself. An odd man, I suspect that his motivations were quite selfish in that it seemed his every conscious moment was devoted to his passion of electronic music. I now believe that he was probably under pressure from the university to allow non-music students like myself access to the studio in order to justify its cost. His dislike for us was palpable. His devotion to his art and his reluctant guidance were a lifelong inspiration to me.
(In all fairness, despite his generally disagreeable attitude, once engaged he could become very approachable, and when one demonstrated that they were actually rather bright and equally passionate about their own artistic endeavors outside of music, he could be quite friendly.)
Cant we start a petition or something?
This whole affair is a real shame. Clearly, Michelle & the team have not just the funding that is needed to maintain such a collection, but also the TLC and dedication that Cornell would never have. I dont understand why it has taken so long for Bob’s widow to come out with this, after the BMF has spent all this time and money and love on the collection. The artifacts clearly belong in NC. Bob moved there for a reason. A bad day for electronic music, but hopefully it can be turned around.
I’ve been following this debate online, and as one who works in Archives I can relate to what a big decision this is to take the archives away from their intended home at the Foundation. Will all the Archives be moved, or just part of the archives?
Thanks for sharing your perspective, Michelle!
HI, Michelle –
really sad to see this state of affairs and can only hope the boat will change course back to the home port. I can only imagine the discouragement and disappoint coursing through your veins right now. Our thoughts and support go out to you and the BMF during this … event. -Chris
It does seem odd that these pieces would not remain with the many others. What goes through my mind is, though Cornell is a fine institution and no doubt a good candidate to receive such items, if there were not a place already housing many things already.
Considering the nature of Dr. Moog’s work, I believe these item would better serve those working with electronic music, rather than general electrical engineers.
What could be a compromise, have the originals archived at Moog foundation and provide copies to Cornell. It seems that electronic format would better serve the university rather actual paper.
Best of luck, perhaps Cornell would be willing to donate them back to the foundation.
I fully support your statement and am very surprised with Bob Moog’s widows decision.
Here’s hoping this decision can be reversed.
Michelle this is so heartbreaking to hear and it really sucks!!!
I have no words for it, I will share this post as much as possible!
This is truly heartbreaking for me. I know this has to be worse for michele and I am truly sorry. Since I was barely a teenager I have been aware of the Moog name and what it stood for. Music for all. The most cherished part of that aspect to me was the wonderment in a childs eyes when that child could make music from Mr. Moogs creations of genius. For all. A great thing indeed. It however seems that “for all” is being forgotten. I sense and undercurrent of ill intent. I hope I am wrong. Enough of that. Michelle I have always looked up to and admired the work you have accomplished. This is just…..well words cannot describe the wrongness of this situation. Again my heart goes out to you. So sorry.
The memory and legacy must stay at the right place in the right hands. I signed the petition and shared it on Facebook. I wish you all the best Michelle. Keep on doing the Moog work
As a lover of Moog music and reviewer in my opinion the archive must stay in the right hands with the right persons. So I signed the petition and shared it on Facebook. Keep up the good Moog work Michelle.
Michelle, there are no words I can think of that would begin to express how incorrect and unjust this feels to me. I will help in any way I can in your efforts to return the archives to the stewardship of the BMF.
~ John Grabowski
Heartbreaking to see this happening. As others have said, Cornell is a fine institution, but the spirit of Bob Moog and the dedicated work of the foundation calls the work here, to its authentic home. Let it be.
Kids Talk Radio had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Moog-Koussa at the 2013 NAMM Show. Our goal was to insure that our younger generation would know about the work of Bob Moog. Our kids made a wonderful suggestion. Cornell University needs to now work Michelle to find the best solution the would achieve the goal. We are suggesting a traveling exhibition to Cornell University and keeping the main collection with the Bob Moog Foundation in the Asheville. We feel that everyone could win. We will run Michelle’s interview again to help to keep the conversation going.
Suggestion two: Use the new technology so kids around the world could get a closer look at the wonderful work of Bob Moog. Here again partner with Cornell. Together you might reach a wider audience.
We are sure that their is more to this story. We just hope that the collection does not get lost in the end.
It is our job to act like a bunch of kids not yours.
Thanks Bryan for the update as myself, and likely many others, who have been a proud supporter of the BMF have been startled, incredulous, disappointed, and even angry at the whole turn of events and perhaps even “perplexed” might fit into that word jumble. Bob’s marvelous inventions were critical in inspiring myself and many others to explore electronic music as children of the late 20th century, and I was an early supporter of the BMF and have contributed where I could with dreams of one day visiting the Moogseum. I appreciate the high road you have taken, but it still seems like a very sad divorce and the kids are sad, but maybe we’ll be alright. That remains to be seen, and I’m really dumbfounded on how to view the Moog® Music folks these days in relation to this turn of events, which seem more calculated than in the best interest of the materials and legacy. Perhaps this will have the reverse intent of the actions taken by Moog Music’s management due to ill will. We can only hope for the best, out here in the wild. Thoughts and well wishes to all at the BMF. -Christopher
… Thank-you for sending this letter today.
– I agree about “staying above the fray.” Having interviewed Bob for “Billboard Magazine” here in Bflo., NY in thee ’80s, my impressions of him included his friendliness & openess with any he came in contact with.
… Hopefully this can all be worked out, keeping his true legacy “alive & well” for today’s children, who too often don’t even have music in their schools! & future generations.
You have my continued support. I am saddened not only by Ileana’s sudden reversal but also the lack of response from Moog Music and Mike Adams who in my opinion showed great disrespect to the hard work of the BMF and Bob’s daughter Michelle. If it were not for the BMFs hard work the archives would be rotting in a basement. Sadly, they will now find obscurity in a climate controlled ivory tower.
I think people should be calling and writing to the Cornell University Library, urging them not to accept the archives, by making them aware of how much damage Cornell will be doing if they accept them. A lot of attention has been payed to the struggle between Dr. Ileana Grams-Moog and the Moog Foundation, but let us not forget that Cornell now plays a role in all this. Call or write them today.
As a MimiMoog assembler in the Williamsville plant in Buffalo, I met many of these people and have great stories – but since we’re talking one-offs here, let me report that THESE WAS A DIGITAL GRAND PIANO being created in a small back room near my assembly station! I heard it being played by Keith Emerson, Bob and Hod knows who else and I snuck in the room and played it myself with my co-worker Dan Little. This thing sounded more like a grand piano that ANY device created up until a few years ago and I wonder what happened to it. I have written Michelle about this, but since she has no knowledge, I thought I would post it here ….
My heart goes out to Michelle. I too knew Bob. I was in the original archives helpong Michele in 2008. I have met Mike several times, I have been in original Moog plants and the new one. I have met Ileana. I inspired a “Student Division” for yhe BMF in 2007 and hosted 2 research grants for BMF. I helped to build content for the BMF YouTube channel conducting many video interviews with great producers and inventors, all supporting the BMF and Bob like Phil Ramone, Frank Serafine, even Eric Persing of “Spectrasonics”. I support Michelle Moog-Koussa 100% in all of her goodness.
Ileana,
I just wanted to thank you for the article you wrote for the January/February 2012 issue of Piecework Magazine concerning your mother’s gloves. The story about your mother was so touching and the pattern has impelled me to proceed with my intention to learn to knit gloves. Your translation of your mother’s pattern is clear and concise enough that I believe I can do this.
I suspected there might be a connection between you and the wonderful Moog instrument designer as the name is not a common one. What a wonderful legacy your husband left! It must be a source of joy to have known such a talented man.
Sincere regards,
Sondra
Historically, the Number 7 is also esoterically associated with the search for truth and enlightenment.
How very interesting and very appropriate, given recent circumstances connected with the questionable integrity of his widow and the current owner of Moog Music.
(Miss you, Bob…)
Do you consider the 2 Moog albums by Dick Hyman as early jazz workings? The Minataur was a pop tune, but there were a lot of interesting tunes on both of those LPs.
Dear Michelle and all BMF supporters
Following the BMF from the very beginning, I am proud of what is accomplished in those 7 years and I bow to the volunteers, supporters and all who contributed to the BMF.
I deeply bow for Michelle being the driving force.
Keep on going BMF!
Being one who was born in 1965, I feel that I was born into the age of
MOOG synthesizers !
His works have shaped
My musical career
Hi there! I live in Asheville and am so thoroughly excited about the Mountain Oasis next weekend! I went for my first Moogfest last year and was absolutely blown away. I have many many friends who attend and a few that have mentioned they help out behind the scenes and volunteer. I think this event is such an amazing event and how it benefits Dr.Bob’s SoundSchool. I am in early childhood and music is the cornerstone of all that we include in our education. It is so important to keep the arts in schools and build that love for melody and sound! And with the school you are combining disciplines and making music a science and developing young childrens minds by challenging them with the tools and instruments that make the music. As a resident of Buncombe County I am thrilled that some of the proceeds go to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation. I do not have children but as I am an educator I have many children!
I am wondering if there is a way for me to give back to the foundation by volunteering at the event? I truly just want to be a part of the display of talent, auditory explosions and visual stimulations!
Please contact me if there is any way or anything that I can do to contribute. Thanks so very much
Stephanie 🙂
Nice piece. Maybe this will lead to someone finally reissuing My Brother the Wind Vol. I.
Excellent info! I’m just curious if the whereabouts of this Moog Model B are known.

I may very well be missing it in full view but are there any geographical restrictions regarding entry for the drawer?
Are Brazilian citizens, living in Brazil, eligible for this raffle?
When will the raffle be held?
What great idea for a raffle ! I hope you guys raise shedloads of money!!!
Owned a Model D for a while after shipping it to the UK from Canada($200 to transport it). I refurbished it and reluctantly had to sell it on.
Used to play along to Rick Wakeman and the sound sent shivers up my spine.
Is this contest open to non-US citizens?

Dear Sir / Madam of BMF,
It states that :-
“SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION OF WINNERS: Winners will be selected at random and announced via e-mail on January 6, 2014”.
But i thought there was only ONE MiniMoog for auction ??
What does this mean please :-
“AFFIDAVIT OF ELIGIBILITY AND LIABILITY / PUBLICITY RELEASE OF GRAND PRIZE WINNER: The Winner will be required to sign an Affidavit of Eligibility and Publicity/Liability Release in order to claim their prize.”
THANKS a lot guys ……….
Paul David Seaman (United Kingdom)
Great posters! They provide an excellent overview of basic synthesis functions and would no doubt be useful educational tools.
I may have found an error on “What Is An Envelope?” On the right, second graph down, should the descending line be blue instead of purple? I believe it represents the release, not the decay, as it’s after the sustain line and occurs at key release.
Hi Paul!
Indeed, the rules should say “winner” (we will correct that immediately). You are correct. There is only on Minimoog Model D being raffled.
Regarding the affidavit, it is simply a form that acknowledges that the BMF is not liable for the instrument in any way after it is transferred to the winner’s possession, and that the BMF has the right to publicize the winner.
We hope this answers your question. Please feel free to contact us at info@www.moogfoundation.org.php72-35.phx1-1.websitetestlink.com with any other questions.
The Bob Moog Foundation
Yes! It is open internationally! Our winners from the last two years have been from South Africa and Australia! Please read the rules and regulations, though. The BMF covers up to $200 in shipping. The winner is responsible for the rest.
Thanks for your interest!
The raffle drawing will be held on January 6, 2013. Please see our posted rules and regulations: https://moogfoundation.org/minimoog-raffle-rules/
No restrictions — open internationally. Please see our rules and regulations here: https://moogfoundation.org/minimoog-raffle-rules/
That being said, we have experienced shipping problems to Brazil in the past. If the winner is from Brazil, they will have to pay for UPS or FedEx delivery, so that we can ensure the instrument’s arrival.
Is there a way to enter/pay non-electronically? (I live in Asheville.)
Is there a non-electronic way to purchase entries? (I live in Asheville).
Thanks!
Thanks very much indeed Michelle,
i did not realize that you had replied but ‘museslave’ on the Moog Music Fourm notified me.
Anyway, i shall definately be purchasing a raffle ticket.
Ta,
Paul
Hi Megan,
You can come by our office at 2 Wall Street (Miles Building), Suite 108 anytime between 9-3pm and purchase a ticket. Please just write us at info@www.moogfoundation.org.php72-35.phx1-1.websitetestlink.com and let us know when you might come by so that we can be expecting you. Thanks!
Just wondering… I entered the raffle back on November 25, 2013, and purchased my ticket online. I haven’t received anything in the mail and wanted to know…Do we actually receive a “Raffle Ticket” in the mail, to hold till the drawing, or are the participant’s names just entered into a database… Thank you

Hi Gary,
You will receive a ticket in the mail sometime in the next week or so. If you have any further questions about it, please emails us at info@www.moogfoundation.org.php72-35.phx1-1.websitetestlink.com. Good Luck!!!
This is truly fascinating, and a great collection of information. (I guess I’ll have to dust off my copy of that ancient Monkees album and give a closer listen.)
I was surprised there was no mention of Arp – thought their modulars came out on the heels of Moog. Were they significantly later?
Great job!
Well-researched and informative article, Thom. But in the second paragraph you’ve made one factual error:
“The Moog Modular was the only synthesizer at the time with a piano-style keyboard controller for playing notes (triggering voltages).”
The EMS DK1 keyboard, built to accompany the VCS3, was available in 1969.
Just for the record, there were actually four synthesizer companies in 1970, not three: Moog, Buchla, EMS, and ARP. Buchla and EMS synths at the time were far more esoteric and difficult to use (the EMS instruments in particular were notorious for instability due to the patch matrix, though they were still popular with bands like Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, and Gong…and Brian Eno used one throughout the 70’s, and the BBC had a huge EMS Synthi 100, similar to the one that can be heard on Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Sirius). ARP was Moog’s biggest competitor in the early 70’s, with their instruments being used by the likes of Pete Townshend, Stevie Wonder, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Jon Lord and Tony Banks.
Oh, and anyone looking for which songs The Monkees used the Moog on, it’s most prominent on Star Collector and Daily Nightly. The instrument actually was owned by Mickey Dolenz, who bought it after seeing it being demonstrated at the Monterey Pop Festival. That’s Mickey playing it on Daily Nightly, and Paul Beaver playing it on Star Collector. Both songs were featured in the second season of the TV show, with the clip of them miming Daily Nightly displaying the instrument itself. I think I read where Mickey said he later sold his Moog to Bobby Sherman (I think it was Bobby Sherman). Mickey’s was something like the 3rd or 4th Moog modular built.
I notice that you have not included Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Co. in this list. Although our first album was not released until 1973, it was ready to go in 1970, and recorded at the Moog Co. in Trumansburg NY except for some tweaking of Ceres Motion and Easter which was done at the Mother Mallard Studio in Enfield, NY after Bob moved the company to Buffalo.. Also, we used three modular Moogs in live performance from 1970 on: Bob’s original demonstration unit, a Moog X (which was lost in a fire) and a prototype Moog 1CA which I gave back to Moog at his request around 2002. The latter was in the collection of the Moog Foundation, but I am not sure who has it now since the archives have been donated to Cornell University.
Obrigado, ótima matéria biográfica sobre este belo instrumento.
Excelente comentário biográfico, fico bastante agradecido com a fundação Bob Moog.

It is interesting how old stories persist about what are now historical artefacts or beloved bucket list possession. The EMS Synthi was and is not unstable due to its patch matrix (which in fact took many yards of EMI, RFI inducing wire out of the circuit) but rather the expectation of a conventional interface was its main impediment in the US market. The EMS VCS3 was not even conceived as a keyboard instrument and as late as 1984 oscillator stabilisation / synchronisation was a modification. Although not a synthesiser but a relative, the Streetly Electronics Mellotron / Novatron was greeted similarly with charges of unreliability by people who were unused to having tapes rather than hammers and gears under their keys, Mean time between failure on a Mellotron M400 was rather astounding if it had nominal care. I am happy to note that both companies are still in operation, EMS still building the Synthi A and VCS3 without keyboards but a very long waiting list. Streetly, Mellotronics are making the very impressive all analog M4000 with a slightly shorter waiting list and they can refurbish any older Mellotron.
Thanks for the enthusiastic response to this months blog! Our well-informed readers have brought some interesting points to our attention. We have revised the blog to reflect the presence of Arp synthesizers in 1970. Although Arp was indeed a player at the time, having been founded in 1969, I hadnt felt that they made a huge impression on the market until 1971, which is why I hadnt originally thought to include them. But lets correct the record on that one (thanks Marty Ahlijanian). The EML and its ElectroComp is another lesser known synth maker from that time. Thanks also to Thomas Fang for pointing out that the Moog wasnt the only synth in 1970 with a keyboardthe EMS VCS 3 could be equipped with an optional DK1 velocity sensitive keyboard. Ive revised my statement about that as well, clarifying that Moog had a keyboard from its early designs. Best to everyone! –Thom
I always thought Jimi Hendrix’ modular made one appearance on his records: the quacky, harpsichord-y sound on the song “Burning of the Midnight Lamp.” The Wikipedia page for that song says it was an actual harpsichord! I swear I remember an interview with someone (probably Eddie Kramer) who said it was the only use of Jimi’s Moog I must re-listen to the track and research further …
One more song used the Moog on the Beatles’ album “Abbey Road”, and that’s “Mean Mr. Mustard.”

If a winner lives in close proximity to the foundation offices, can they pick up the moog as opposed to it being shipped?
Yes, of course! We would love for the winner to pick up the Minimoog if possible. Good luck!
Hey Michelle, it’s Mohamed from Egypt ( Machine Eat Man )
I’m dropping peace & love from Cairo,Egypt.
This is totally awesome, i always wanted a moog. But if i lose, $20 will gone for nothing. Im not really sure as a student… 🙁
My ticket hasn’t arrived yet as of January 2nd. It’s friday tomorrow and having not gotten my ticket I’m a little worried. What happens if I don’t get it in time for the drawing?
Hello. I entered for the raffle on Dec. 20th and paid vis PayPal but I have not received my certificate confirming my entry. 🙁
The big day is upon us at last! Good luck, everyone… But, you know, good luck especially to me. 😉 And to Jim Smith of Teeel, per our mutual good luck agreement.
Rest assured that your name is in our raffle database and it is from there that we will draw the winner later this afternoon!
Good luck!
Hi Richard,
Rest assured that your name has been entered into the raffle database, and it is from there that the winner will be drawn.
Good luck!
Where do we see who won?
Hello Clément,
We are announcing later today. Please check back on this page in by 3pm (EST). We’ll also be posting on our Facebook page.
Good luck!
I’m looking forward to congratulating the winner. Ah ya caught me. I’m holding up a mirror. I hope this raffle gives the BMF a nice boost to start off the new year. I’m also hoping that you’ll be able to do more of this in the future.
Good luck everyone!… I wish with all my heart win this instrument … I hope!!!!!
😀
SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME….WHO’S THE WINNER!!!???
Hi Mike,
Mads Wilken of Copenhangen, Denmark, won the raffle!
We extend our gratitude to all of those who entered!
Thanks for the quick reply. Even though it was a painful response, I still appreciate the personal touch!
:^]
Well dang! Maybe next time… I hope Mads likes it!
Hope the kids have fun and learn a lot!
Congratulations Mads. This will certainly be one well traveled mini. Now I’m on to my next chapter in attempting to get some more Moog Power into my life.
Who won?
Hi there!
Im thinking to buy the entire set of those beatful posters but i’d like to know if you send world wide? i’m in Mexico City
Hi Luis! We ship world wide.
Your encouragement during my undergraduate trials in 1987 at the University of North Carolina at Asheville continue to resonate with me.
I would enjoy treating you to dinner. I am filled with a sense of gratitude when I think about you.
This sounds like a really neat exhibit…not sure if I can get away to see it in Tompkins County, would be cool if it were in other cities too, perhaps in the Greater Detroit Area….
I’ve got The Monkees 1967 RA Moog Modular #1019 here

Hey there, I just found out about Moogfest this weekend and am really interested in what the foundation was! I was wondering if you still need volunteers for the shows this weekend? My name is Hazel, feel free to call me on my cell 828 989-7190 or email me back at hazelottoavl@gmail.com
Best Wishes
I have both of the Hyman Moog albums and still play them from time to time. I used to play them both on my college radio show in the 70s and people always called me to ask what the **** is that? I love them both to this day.
Sounds like a great exhibit…if you are considering bringing it to the Greater Detroit Area, I can help you organize it.
Will be going up north at the end of the month – going to enjoy this to the max. Keep up the good work. All the best!!!
Bubba, In regards to the ELO track- Check out the compilation Mr. Bluesky on Frontiers/Big Trilby records. Jeff Lynne has tweaked all the tracks within and Richard Tandy’s Moog bass on Turn to Stone does appear to be more forward in the mix. Thanks for a great couple of articles!
childhood memory: I grew up in Williamsville, NY and the Moog Music testing workshop was holed-up in an old gelatin factory along a shortcut on my daily walk to/from elementary school. I used to walk through and listen/watch them test their equipment as a child. It was around ’72-’75 and I was just 9-10 years old. Always amazed at the incredible sounds they created! Looking back, it probably contributed to my life-long obsession with electronic music!
What a wonderfully informative work. Amazing to see the progression of technology. Well done Marc
Peter Wagner
(Creator of the “Synthony 14” voltage-controlled synthesiser by Synthonic Systems in the UK in the 1970s)
I really need a new synth! Thank you very much 🙂
I had one in the 80s and I’m sorry I got rid of it. It was my favorite synthesizers, I’d love to have another one.
I have the ms 10 for 15 years the sound is fantastic ! ….greeting from belgium.
I want it and i need it please! 🙂
I have the ms 10 for 15 years the sound is fantastic ! Greeting from belgium
Definitely would love to win!
Thank you!
would go well in my modest studio.
I have been interested in synthesizers since I was a young boy. I love collecting and playing what I can, sadly you know these things cost money. Most of my gear is craigslist or garage sale finds so I were to win this contest I would be eternally grateful.
i’d love the synth ,. always wanted one,. could never afford it,.
I hope i win i could really use it
please please please MS-20 has always been a dream of mine to own:)
hope I win!!!
I always wanted one of these! :’)
I would absolutely love an MS-20 to work with in my upcoming work.
It would make producing sweet analogue sounds all the more easy.
please come to our family
Always loved Korg synths. I had a shot of the new ms-20 and it still sounds as awesome as the original. Unfortunately my piggy bank is a bit low at the moment. Boo-hoo!
i want this
hawsjkoeti
I love synths!!
Have been a Moog user since the late 70’s.
Have a Voyager in the studio as we speak.

Tom
Looks like the youtube video of the Live performance has been taken down 🙁
I love taking use of Synthesizers
Mooooog!
I love Korg that I use & abuse in my compositions…
Mark Vail’s book has been a great companion reader – I’d love an updated version! (aside from the MS, style phone, and sample library, of course).
I want it.
I’d like to win first prize from a list.
Love this machine.
Correction to a reader comment above: Hendrix’s “Burning of the Midnight Lamp” is the Baldwin Electric Harpsichord, an electrified acoustic instrument, but not a synthesizer. It was borrowed from Mike Matthews, who later founded the Electro-Harmonix pedal company in NYC.
I Love you Moog!
Would love to get my hands on one
Just hoping for some synthy goodness!
Hi
“I’ll keep my fingers crossed & keep up the Xlent work
Best regards Roland
You have links to Film Score Monthly discussions of Moog appearances in film music. I would therefore appreciate a reference to my book as the source of your information about Phil Ramone and the use of three Moog keyboards in OHMSS: THE MUSIC OF JAMES BOND by Jon Burlingame (Oxford University Press). The Ramone video interview link does not contain all of the info you write about; my own interview with Ramone appears to be the source, as I have never seen this detail anywhere else. Thank you very much. JB
This is great! I’ve seen “Toomorrow” and it’s one of my favorite good/bad films. Similarly, “Skidoo” 1968 has a wacky electronic piece during Jackie Gleason’s accidental acid trip. Don’t know if it’s a Moog or not, but I’d say it’s quite likely that it was Beaver & Krause, since Nilsson did the score and was L.A. based at the time.
Re. Entropical Paradise; make that a triple album box set – or was there a double too?
Hi. I didn’t check out all of the blogs, but how about “Everything You Always Wanted to Hear on the Moog” by Andrew Kazdin and Thomas Z. Shepard. This is one of my favorites.
Then there’s “Electric Love” LS 86072
and “MOOG!” by Claude Denjean SP 44155 in phase 4 stereo.
If you need photos of the album covers, let me know.
mike
I’ve got an original MS-10,….what is the difference with the MS-20(2 generators, maybe)? Great old wild filters on mine! Sure would be a dream for anyone not having the original beast!
“Winner will also pay 25% of MSRP minus cost of raffle ticket by certified check to the Bob Moog Foundation for the IRS (Uncle Sam makes us do this! The Bob Moog Foundation does NOT keep the money from the check. It is for our filing with the IRS)”
Could you explain the reason for this? I’ve never heard of this before.
Hello! This is a fun blog.
Another film that has Moog in it is “Midnight Cowboy.” It can be heard during the party scene, overdubbed and interspersed with other music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQSdi-UfGrU
Walter Sear was the Moog composer/player and he told a story that John Barry went to Sear’s studio to see what the Moog could do, while downstairs in another room an orchestra was recording the soundtrack. Impressed with the Moog, Barry called the studio downstairs and sent the orchestra home. This is the story as Walter told it, more in the context of the fear of the synthesizer putting orchestras out of work, but the story may have been honed and adjusted over time, so take it with a grain of salt.
I bought Age of Electronic us, and the other orange cover lap by DickHyman many years ago. Like it a lot, lost both moving many times. Like to get a download of his music, any ideas of availability ?
Thanks for your interest in Dick Hyman’s Moog music. I am not aware of a digital download for either of the Hyman Moog LPs, e.g., on iTunes or Amazon. But both have been available on CD. Check out Amazon or even eBay for that.
Gary, names were entered into a database. Better luck next time!
Rodman, the reason is that’s just how NC nonprofit tax law works. The 25% does not go to the Foundation, but to the IRS. Tax laws vary from state to state, and that’s how North Carolina tax law works.
Dibbs
Can Canadians enter this raffle?
YES!
This is really such an awesome idea. Thank you
I live in Europe .can i enter to this raffle
i live in germany can i can i enter this raffle
nicole
Nicole, yes you can. Check out rules and regulations here: https://moogfoundation.org/fall-2014-minimoog-raffle-rules-and-regulations/ The Foundation will pay up to $200 USD in shipping costs.
Yes! See our answer to Nicole!
I bought a raffle ticket. Then I have heard nothing else about this raffle. Was it held? Who won???
Leo, raffle winners were selected and announced in September, and you can see them here in the updated blog entry: https://moogfoundation.org/win-a-subaru-outback-the-bob-moog-foundation-and-prestige-subaru-announce-road-to-innovation-raffle-to-benefit-dr-bobs-soundschool/ FYI, we just launched a new Minimoog raffle this month: http://bit.ly/minimoograffle2014
This would substantially incincrease the depth of my sound along side my Hammond M3. Good vibes that I’m chosen.
RE: Tax obligations for a Virginia resident, if I bought one ticket, would I owe taxes on $20.00 if I were to be lucky enough to win, or would it be taxes on the $5000.00 that the Mini-Moog Model D is valued at?
Wow i need that !!!
Mal, this is from our rules and regulations post about this raffle:
“For any prizes valued at $1200 or more, the Bob Moog Foundation will file IRS Form 1099 MISC with Internal Revenue Service reporting the value of the prize as income to the winner.” https://moogfoundation.org/fall-2014-minimoog-raffle-rules-and-regulations/
I’m also need that!
There was a version of this with a female narrator- I can’t seem to find it- can anyone help me with that?
I’m looking for “Cosmic Sounds of the Zodiac” – but the version I used to have was w/ a female narrator- does anyone know where I can get that?
To everyone at the Bob Moog Foundation :
A warm WELCOME and a BIG HELLO to my very good friends and acquaintances of the “Power Trio”, Dominic Milano, Jerry Kovarsky, Daniel Liston Keller to the Bob Moog Foundation, as well as my very best thoughts and regards to Michele Moog-Koussa, and everyone already on board!
Lots of great News coming-up and one of my new projects : The “M.A.P.” (a.k.a. “Moraz Alban Project”) ready to be released very soon!
Musically & Artistically Yours:-)))
Patrick Moraz
Congratulations to BMF and the powerhouse board!
falling in love…
The key contact comment is news to me. I sold my Minimoog in 1981 largely because of this problem. The pitch would go crazy when I played some notes. I never thought about a permanent fix for that at the time. I’m sure it would be worse after so many years. Great that there’s a fix!
bealtiful
I have a old model D
I wont that !!!
So …. someone won?
The complete set is sold out. Will it be available again soon? I need these for a science and technology program for children for February 2015. Teaching how to understand sound through analog synthesis.
Peter, I think we just needed to update our inventory. Please try again, we should have more in stock! Contact us at info@www.moogfoundation.org.php72-35.phx1-1.websitetestlink.com if you are unable to make your purchase!
Yes, Alan, this year’s winner is Danny Hagan: https://moogfoundation.org/bob-moog-foundation-announces-fall-2014-raffle-williamsville-era-minimoog-with-lightner-optokey-mods/
Hi Michelle,
I received an email from the BMF staff. The posters were back in stock again. I received them last week. They are great and will be very helpful.
Thanks for your reply.
Best regards,
Peter McGuire
Great! Enjoy them, Peter!
in the early nineteen-eighties i took a survey course of electronic music
history. i was vaguely aware of some of it. we had an assignment to produce a short composition so a local band member named Larry allowed me to use his bands synth. i had a ball. made a looong piece and just had to keep it all. i wish every thinking person could have a chance to
just play and play and play around with one of these things. sad that every school didnt get one.
my thanks to all you pioneers.
I have a wonderful boy going into 2nd grade at Black Mtn. Primary School next fall. I would like to have him get exposure to your Sound School. How can that happen?
Fascinating and really valuable. I think item 7, the Random Generator, is not so much a sound source as a random trigger delay. I wonder what this would have been used for?
Schematic #7 “Random Generator” is not a noise source. It is a sample-and-hold random step generator. It has an internal fixed frequency sawtooth which is sampled when a positive edge is presented to the trigger input.
following on from pete wagner there, I think schematic #7 is a sample&hold device…. I see a noise source & a triggered FET…
Great!
Actually it looks like a random voltage generator. The two transistors in the upper left make a noise generator. The trigger input triggers a sample and hold, which samples the noise. The resulting sampled voltage is buffered and sent out as a control voltage.
Being both a “Senior Mechanical Designer” and a “Senior PCB Designer”, I can have a certain appreciation for the amount of effort it took to develop all of this equipment using strictly “hand-drawn” manual methods. I am also old enough to know what it took because I was doing similar types of work back in the 1970’s before computers took over the world. I also have “hand-designed” Printed Circuit Boards just like Bob Moog has done in these examples. It is NOT easy!!!
Looking at the schematics and the board layouts, almost makes me want to re-create these old designs using today’s new technologies. But, for what purpose?
Look, i really need this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZy6gasGVX4
Jerry, because you can? 😀
1st schematic looks like the diagram fro the heater and A/C circuits, on my 1996 Ford Taurus Wagon, which failed because the heater-A/C fan motor control circuit overloaded with aging, heated up, melted the plastic container, would not let the tiny coil/magnetic points release, causing my fan to run when the key/motor is shut off. As I usually ran the fan on low speed, I did not hear it running and it discharged the battery, which I discovered at 7am the next morning which was about 20 below zero Fahrenheit, which in turn caused me to say “Oh DARN”………..
Luckily the Ford dealer had a replacement part , being that old (1996), I assumed I was lucky to have an older car that had this problem, and there were more people having the same problem as the parts man told me “Yeah, we sell a lot of those relay switches”
Hi! I heard that moog foundation will announce the winner of moog laberation by 24 april , but i couldnt find any regarding of the information ?
Looking forward for your reply , thanks!
Bernard, we shared our winner on Facebook on 4/24. Have a look here: https://www.facebook.com/BobMoogFoundation/photos/a.79253978478.81480.75141568478/10152872237463479/?type=1&theater
I am a proud Owner of a Moog III P, Voyager Signature Édition, MidiMoog etc.. And I havé Just made a séries of Analog Synthesis Masterclasses in my studio, with great success
Tank you for those wonderful photos !
Best regards,

Unfortunately, “Dick Hyman – The Age of Electronicus” isn’t listed as available on audio CD or as ever having been released on audio CD (at least as of May 2015)
“Dick Hyman – Moog – The Eclectric Eclectics Of Dick Hyman”, and two tracks from “The Age of Electronicus” appear to now be available, as bonus tracks on the CD “Dick Hyman / Mary Mayo – Moon Gas” (OMNI – 180)
A very fine charity… associated with a class act cruise. The artists… the patrons… the talent… aboard this ship… it’s astoundingly fun. What a perfect fit to have Bob Moog Foundation associated with CTTE, marrying a worthy cause to a high class music cruise experience.
I have a reel to reel that the only markings on it read “Moog Love”.
No idea if this is an official album or a compilation someone made, but it is awesome.
Scottish electronic music whiz Ralph Geesin . It’s RON GEESIN.
Wonderful to see such scholarship about such important music. Thank you.
The Polar Music Prize 2001 goes to Robert Moog
“…for his design of the MiniMoog, the first compact, easy-to-use synthesizer, which paved the way to the realm of electronic sounds that has revolutionised all genres of music during the past half-century.”
This is great article. Thank you!
I’m probably not the only person surprised at the omission of TONTO’s Expanding Headband and their second release (as just TONTO) It’s About Time. Richard Teitelbaum’s album Time Zones would also warrant consideration.
Sun Ra: My Brother the Wind, Fondation Maeght Nights
Better performances may well litter his voluminous output, but this is pretty historical stuff, on the mock-up mini Bob gifted him.
Zappa had an Eaton for his guitar.
Film/broadcasting sense is 1914.
One other comment. Emerson played part of The Minotaur as part of a live solo during “Come Take A Pebble” on one of their live albums. A very nice homage, that’s for sure.
Great article… I just ran to amazon to pick up the recordings released by the Alga Marghen label! Thanks for the tip!
Hi,
Just wondering if you were aware of Ruth White’s contribution to electronic music, as I didn’t see anything in your article. She was an early pioneer. I added a website just for your information.
All the best
Thanks for finally writing about >Moog: A History in RecordingsThe First Moog

Thank you Michelle for these wonderful words. Not only remembering Keith Emerson, but also you father.
Thank you Michelle for putting into words what I have been struggling with for the last few days. No further words are required – just simply “Remember”…..
Michelle, one of the best (and accurate) remembrances I have read yet. Beautiful.
Thank you.
Beautiful tribute Michelle, to someone we all considered family. I’ve told him that myself on many occasions. Truly devastated by his passing, but even though we’ve lost the man, we have not lost his music and it is there that he will reside with me forever. Love and hugs!
An absolutely beautiful tribute to a synth legend by the only one who could make such a statement.. Thank you so much Michelle, you have eased my soul.
a lovely tribute. my love of keith emerson’s music stretches back to The Nice, his “organ trio” that transcended that jazzy moniker. he was the jimi hendrix of the organ. it didn’t surprise me when he formed ELP and released Lucky Man – a song whose sound drove me to find out “what made that?” soon after, unable to afford a Moog, i bought my first synthesizer kit from PAiA and was lost in the electrons. my local music store got a Minimoog demo instrument, and they were kind enough to tolerate a teenager’s noodling on saturday afternoons. in the early 70’s i finally got my chance to see ELP live, in Crawfordsville, IN, on a bill with Humble Pie and Johnny Winter And. the two opening acts did absolutely nothing to prepare the audience for Tarkus, which certainly blew my mind. many synthesizers joined my coterie of acoustic and electronic instruments – a Moog Rogue and a MicroMoog were steps on the way to more complex possibilities. my first real Moog, appropriately, was a Moog Etherwave Theremin that i built from a kit. i still use it today. i was pleased a few years back when, in my job as a video editor/designer i created a TV spot for a reissue of ELPs early records. still sounded good to me! thanks Michelle for the great little heartfelt tribute. i’ll close with my favorite Moog moment: a few years back a good friend of mine was in town from Copenhagen to record an album at the incredible NYC recording studio Sear Sound. Walter Sear, as many Moog fans will recall, worked with Bob on the Theremin and the synths, and i was anxious to meet him. i got the chance to hang out with Walter for several hours, and we went head-to-head in our geekdom. at the time i was involved with the burgeoning NY Theremin Society that was organized by my good friend Suzanne Fiol, founder of Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, and sadly no longer with us. i cajoled Walter to come out to see the delightful group of Thereminists that were playing shows at Issue. i said to Walter: “come on Walter, how many Thereminists drop in here to talk with you.” Walter replied: “you’re the third one today.”
Thank you for this. Keith and your dad had a major influence on so many people that you will never know. Like many, I am still processing the news about Keith. Your piece here brings us all closer together. Yes, we are all family. So happy for all the times I got to see Keith perform. So sad that he felt he could no longer deliver. He already delivered. And for me, he continues to deliver with new and renewed connections that have come about because of the news. The show will never end.
John
THANK YOU Michelle. By far the best, most moving and accurate tribute to the man, his talents, and the wonderful relationship he had with your father, also a legend.
Lovely to read and see the photos.
Thank you Michelle, for those wonderful words…!
Mimi,
Sharing tears with you and the countless BMF followers.
Thank you for the poignant and moving reflection on Keith and your dad and your relationship with them both.
Keep up your good work. I am so proud of you!

Thank you, Michelle, for such a beautiful and poignant post.
I was at that NAMM show pictured, where your father jammed with Keith. In fact, I had the ultimate luck and joy to be a small part of that experience; my friend Rik Pepe had connections with Will Alexander, Keith’s roadie/tech at the time. In exchange for pre-show access, we were recruited to help with the setup and sound check. At some point, it became an issue that someone had to run over to the Moog booth and pick up that very theremin – the one that Bob is playing in that picture. I jumped at the chance, and with the proper permissions (“Who sent you? Keith did!”) I picked up the device and brought it back to the stage where it was tested and ready to go in the evening.
I was sitting in almost the exact spot where that picture was taken (it could have been ME, but I can’t claim ownership – maybe it was from Rik Pepe?) In any case, I thought my heart would explode for sheer joy from the moment Bob walked out and started “Jamming” with Keith during AquaTarkus. It was perhaps one of the hands-down coolest things I had ever witnessed, and I was right up in front as well.
After the show, there were even “groupies” that wanted to meet him – as such – this was a trade show, remember! – but your Dad and Keith took it all in good humored stride. Bob was awestruck at it all – and quite a bit amused – that he was being treated with such admiration and star-power. I OF COURSE got Bob’s autograph and related that I’d picked up the theremin earlier in the day. Soon enough, Bob, Keith and everyone else took off for a meet and greet somewhere, but I’d had the time of my life; witnessing two of my biggest (still to this day!) heroes. Shook both their hands once more, and walked away, floating on air.
God bless them both.
Beautiful words about the relationship of Keith, Bob and the Moog. You captured the moment…
I was at that1973 concert at Rich Stadium (now Ralph Wilson Stadium). I was a goofy 18 year old. . .ELP ROCKED the house!
I always wondered about the Moog connection because back in the 1960’s I had an uncle who worked for Moog (in Western New York). I was not sure if the Moog Synthesizer was connected with THAT PARTICULAR Moog. All I remember is that it was a great place to work back in the day.
Beautifully worded, Mimi. Bob and Keith truly had a synergy, and now I shall dearly miss them both…
Michelle this was very touching. I had the pleasure of meeting both Keith and your dad when ELP came to Madison Sq Garden Dec 17-18 1973. I last met Keith on Mar 5 2010.
Your father created a monster and his name was Keith Emerson the master of the keyboards. I would lovingly call his modular Moog the monster.
Now they will be back together again and making new things and new music. Now he has his chance to hook up with Jimi Hendrix
May their dreams live on
Thanks Michelle, my heart goes out to you, I know how much Keith meant to you and your dad, I’m very sorry for your loss
A beautiful tribute Michelle. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings about Keith and of course your father. Two pioneers in modern music and technology that changed the world!
Fantastic written piece… and very much appreciated.
These are extremely strange days;
On one hand, it is a sort of resurrection of the impact and importance of keith’s working now coming through. As always with great masters, to late when they are not here anymore…..
on the other hand, this disbelief and inability to grasp it.
To some extent, I think a lot of us simply have lived with “keith” being there as a cornerstone in our lifes, regardless if we never met him. The fact that he’s not here anymore isn’t ok. Not only relating to Keith as such, but also how it changes our lives…
How come, like in my case being a non-musician, we’re people all over, all walks of life, being not only affected by him, but also unusually bonded by him ?
Again, really great and heartfelt message !
Great words to a great artist.
I was lucky to meet your father at a John Eaton concert at the University of Chicago, Michelle. I pressed a copy of my cassette “Pink Sounds From The Purple Plain” into his hand and said, “I made this on my MemoryMoog, I hope you enjoy it”.
Keith Emerson was my musical hero and he will be missed. I hope the world remembers him as a great composer. His music, and the Moog legacy live on.
Thank you for writing this, Michelle. I know it wasn’t easy. Much love.
A beautifully expressed tribute to two amazing trail blazers.
Never had the pleasure of meeting Bob or Keith, but their respective works touched my life (and bank account 😉 on so many levels. Thanks for this moving tribute.
Thank you for such a poignant tribute to both Keith and your father, both brave visionaries with kind hearts. They are missed.
This gave me the chills. Beautifully expressed. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
Thank you so much Michelle. This exquisitely beautiful and heartfelt tribute helps all of us as we struggle with the loss, yet celebrate the transcendent effect Keith…and your father had on us.
I’ve told you this before but it bears repeating: I too was at the pictured NAMM show where Bob got up onstage with Keith–and it was only BECAUSE of Bob that I got to witness this magical moment. I met Bob for the first time earlier in the day (I could hardly believe I was talking to Bob Moog!) and the subject of Keith came up. With a twinkle in his eye he told me that Keith was playing a show that evening and asked if I’d be interested. He directed where to go to get a ticket and said “Tell them Bob sent you.” Out of the blue to a complete stranger, this act of generosity floored me. When I saw Bob play the theremin onstage with Keith that night I was beside myself. As soon as he raised his hands to the theremin he lit up and became a man possessed! The connection and joy that he and Keith shared was unforgettable. After the show I persevered through several denials by roadies and got to go backstage and met Keith for the first time.
The whole thing seemed like a dream. But it was real..because of Bob.
But of course, making dreams a reality is what Bob did.
Thank you Bob. Thank you Keith for the incalculable inspiration and fierce artistry. And thank you Michelle.
Michelle, thank you for such a beautiful, eloquent and heartfelt tribute. You’ve successfully articulated exactly why so many of us feel such an acute sense of loss. Keith was truly a unique artist and the world is immeasurably poorer for his loss. He and your late father certainly made for a formidable combination; the course of modern music would have been very different without your father’s wonderful invention and Keith’s absolute mastery of the instrument.
The one consolation is that Keith’s influence and extraordinary body of recorded work will live on long into the future.
Much love to all in the extended KE family
Truly awesome words Michelle, I had the pleasure of meeting Keith once and sharing a drink with him, he was generous with his time as well as his advice. Never to be forgotten – Bob Moog and Keith Emerson making the music revolution.
<3
Thank you, Michelle, for a beautifully detailed, warm and touching piece. Needless to say, Keith was the god of the Rock expanding synthesis world of the late 60’s, 70’s and well into the 80’s. As a university teacher of contemporary music history, he was and remains a primary developer of our music today. When we met only too briefly in 2014, I had the wonderful experience of talking with him at length, talking about piano and composition and about his place within my small world of Music Education and History.
Your words and those of so many others tell it all!!
Beautifully written. A wonderful testament to an amazing relationship that changed the world of music forever.
thank you, michelle.
Thank you very much Michelle for sharing this. We all miss him already.
Michelle, so eloquent and well-stated. Thank you for writing this beautiful tribute to our hero Keith Emerson.
Very nice tribute! It is hard to think of the name “Keith Emerson”,without invoking the name “Bob Moog”.The two, during the early seventies’,were so totally connected. The right place and the right technology,in the right time!Seems’ now like Dr.Moog was building his equipment specifically for Keith Emerson, although,we all know that was not the reality!Sometimes “Cosmic events’ ” do seem to align.Needless to say,we shall all miss Keith Emerson and Dr.Robert Moog!
Wonderful tribute. I love how you described what a lot of Keith’s electronic music was really about and how it unified people.
Beautiful touching tribute!!! The symbiosis between Robert Moog & Keith Emerson was one that’s alignment could only have happened during the burgeoning Progressive scene!! Dr. Moog’s invention was tailor made for the futuristic vision of a musician such as Keith Emerson!!!
Keith Emerson’s contributions to music & synthesizers can’t be understated but can certainly be underscored as he was the most important composer of the 20th Century!!! He will be missed so very much but will live on through his vast legacy which in the broadest sense encompassed Classical, Jazz & Rock & Roll!!!
Dear Michelle:
i have never met you, Keith or your dad…
I would like to share my personal connection to your father & Keith E.
i’m hobbyist bought my 1st Rompler workstation 10yrs ago & learned Music Theory….
i never made it to see ELP live:
i heard “Lucky Man in 73′
i was only 12 at the time, but after hearing that track on FM radio the sounds the Moog made, fascinated me
needless to say Lucky man was indelibly stamped in my mind and bought Brain Salad Surgery on 8 track with paper route collections i saved up
i was deeply saddened & feelings of loss began to set in after a few days of being in shock learning of Keith’s passing last week
when your Dad passed i had difficulty coping with his death, now that Keith has passed these same feelings of overwhelming grief have returned
thank you very much for putting on paper your connection to a musician & artist-his art and contribution are immortal
RIP Keith Emerson
Dear Michelle:

I’m a beginner studied music theory 101 & bought my 1st Rompler 10yrs ago
I have never seen ELP live
In 73 i was 12 yrs old when i heard “Lucky Man over the FM airwaves for the 1st time & was fascinatied by the sounds of the Moog that I’ve never heard anyplace on the planet

thank you for sharing your personal photos and your connection on paper for all of us to savor…….
RIP Keith Emerson
From New Zealand so far away from the chaos and disbelief there are tears of respect. A well written tribute and God’s speed.
Thank you Michelle. I too have long been a Moog fan and an Emerson fan since I was about 10. I remember asking my big sister to take me to see ELP when they played in my hometown in about 1972. My sister thought I wasn’t serious since “kids don’t go to those kind of shows”. It was a real bummer for me. I went to the Museum of Making Music about 6 years ago and saw Keith’s monster Moog, and also many other Moog instruments. They all thrilled me. I don’t play (well, not very well) and have utmost respect for those musicians who also are gifted with technological innovation. Emerson was the whole package. He was unafraid to see what this unique instrument could do, and was constantly inventing new voices for the synthesizers. My keyboard at home is a little old thing with a lot of presents. About 30 of the presents are Emerson’s various keyboard voices. Your words in this memorial moved me deeply. Kieth was a fixture in my musical world, and his work cannot be separated from your dad’s work. You have eloquently expressed that intriguing relationship.
Why can’t I pay with Paypal?
Hi Sander. Paypal doesn’t allow for the processing of raffles. It’s their regulation, not ours. Please feel free to use our secure credit card processor!
I work for Moog in Asheville. Am I able to buy tickets?
Hi Mike. Per the Rules and Regulations cited in the post, employees of Moog Music, Inc., and their immediate family members living in the same household are not eligible to enter the raffle (neither are employees and the Board of the Foundation). Sorry!
Is this contest legal in New York City?
Hi Dave. Each contestant is responsible for doing the legal research for his or her own state. You can probably Google it and find out. Thanks for your interest!
Hello, gave the rules a quik read. Can you enter if you’re not from the US. (UK). It said something about being present??
Hello Aly. The raffle is open internationally, you do not have to be in the US to enter. Last year’s winner was from Belgium!
I live just 2 miles down Main St from the old Williamsville, NY factory. If I won this, it would be like it was coming home!!
Eloquent expression of your thoughts Michelle. Thank you.
Keith Emerson introduced a lot of us Southern high schoolers to Bach, Bartok, Brubeck, Copland, Ginastera, Holst, Janacek, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, and other greats. He inspired me to acquire a Hammond Porta-B and analog synth back in the day and play in local bands for weekend money. In the college years, though I was a Psych major, he continued to inspire me to take music appreciation, beginning orchestration, jazz studies, and electronic music composition at the first university EMS in my state to have a Moog modular system. I did many an overnight in that lab, working patches of increasing complexity, checking waveforms on the scope, working the ribbon controller, and laying down tracks on open reel TEAC and Revox. That Moog system is now under the care of BMF under permanent loan by Dr. Engebretson at UNC-G, and I thank Michelle and August very much for taking off the bubble wrap and allowing me to visit with it again during a trip to Asheville in 2014. Quite a trip down memory lane! Moogs and Hammonds are a giant leap from my sister’s Magnus chord organ on which I learned Tarkus in 1972. Thanks for the inspiration Keith.?
Admiring the commitment you put into your
website and in depth information you offer. It’s great to
come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same outdated rehashed material.
Great read! I’ve saved your site and I’m adding your RSS feeds to
my Google account.
I worked at the Moog plant in Williiamsville N.Y and was in finial assembly .I signed hundreds of those mini moogs.great job!
Hi, i cannot access to the purchase page – it says “404 page not found”
Why is this?
Hi David, The raffle sold out yesterday, March 30th at 2pm. We will hold another raffle next year. Please try again then, and enter early if possible!
How large are the photos?
Hi Scott,
Thanks for your interest in the Larry Fast photos, they are signed and numbered 8″ X 10″ prints.
A wonderful and moving tribute. This music and this innovative technology has shaped my musical imagination and I am very grateful to your father and to Keith. Thank you for sharing this.
Hi there, I enjoy reading through your post.I wanted
too write a little comment to support you.
Thank you Michelle, for sharing your wonderful thoughts and memories of your wonderful Family.
Hello ,
I (And for sure , not only me), Dream of a MemoryMoog Plus (or LAMM) Rafle .
Any chance to see it one day ?
Great idea, Chris. We’ll consider it! Keep a lookout in August.
Thanks to both of you.
Together with my family and JSB you have been the happiness of my life
Hi BMF,
What about Wendy Carlos? She, above all others, introduced the Moog Synthesizer to the world.
best wishes great reading pleased to see Jean Michel Jarre
Lovely tribute to Mr. Emerson, a man who gave us so much, and touched us so deeply with his wonderful exuberant music. And there was always that connection to papa Moog’s machines, the “voice” of the gods that Keith so completely tapped into. I so wish he could have enjoyed his golden years, letting go what was no more and reminiscing over all that magic he created over the years. He certainly deserved it.
In the late 80’s I wrote a letter to the editor of Keyboard, bitching about how the Japanese were eating our lunch in the keyboard wars, and advocating for some patriotic nationalism in our buying habits. I was surprised to see Bob Moog’s rebuttal the next month, basically saying “Nay nay, the Japanese were innovating, and the American keyboard companies had rested on laurels…” It was a brave and honest evaluation, and coming from anyone else, I likely would not have accepted the message. Your dad was the real deal, a true mensch.
Sounds like a dream!
Legendary sounds.
Im dreaming of a polyphonic moog…since im in love with my prodigy…….let my dreams come true…….
Wow. It is so hard to get one of those dinosaurs today.
Thanks for giving us the chance to win one. 🙂
I have that excellent Syrinx album. They did produce at least a second album as well, and I’m pretty sure it had the Moog on it as well, though it may have been another unit after the fire.
Interesting to note that what drew me to Syrinx’s music was that one of their musical pieces from the album in Mr. Cockell’s hands was the theme song to a fantastic TV show called “Here Come the Seventies”, which for its time was an excellent view into the exciting world of technological and social innovation which seemed to be very much in its heyday. Great piece – synth, synthesized drums, Mr. Pringle’s saxophone played through a wah-wah pedal or similar variable filter.
What with Canada (Montreal specifically) being the center of the world (temporarily) thanks to Expo 67 and Man and His World in ’68, these were exciting times and a lot of innovative music and other forms of art were really flourishing in Canada… almost 50 years ago now.
a dream to dream
What a great remembrance — it gives a good bit of insight into Bob Moog’s character!
Hey Michelle, folks,
I just noticed that my 2016 Calendar has a mis-print – October dates are wrong – they are off by a day!?. The one I have starts October on a Sunday – it should be Saturday!
Is it just mine, or were these printed wrong?
Regards,
Denis
This is so great. I hope we can hear a lot more anecdotes like this from Mr. Ong.
Love the historical journey. I miss not seeing him at tradeshows, and hearing that special laugh he had. He certainly taught me a lot when we work together Kurzweil. He was such a gentle and humble man such an amazing skill set. He forever change the world. Love the work you’re doing at the Bob Moog Foundation. I’d love to get my hands on that if only just for a few minutes.
A dream for so many years (When I started to play keyboards)
Brilliant big sound!
This would be UnBelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember Donald Buchla coming to my college, the Crane School of Music in Potsdam New York, back in 1975 and he brought with him his music box, a 12-volt based beauty, which our electronic music department and Professor Donald Funes gladly took possession of, and it was a big beautiful blue suitcase that opened up and we’d define the instrument ourselves with patch cords which were color coded to indicate their different lengths! And I remember Bob Moog making a trip there as well! Ah the good old days.. he was a genius they both were!
Somewhere around 1970 (perhaps earlier) I attended a concert in Century City, CA (Los Angeles) where Mort Garson set up his modular on an outdoor stage and played a concert. I believe he was miming the entire performance which was on tape. I requested a visit to his studio for a tour of the instrument (I was about 16 at the time) to which he agreed. He gave me about 15 minutes and kicked me out. Imagine my surprise when that very system went up for sale in the local classifieds. I have been its proud caretaker since the ’80s. When Bob autographed it for me, he said he believed it to be the first system delivered to Los Angeles.
Very interesting, thanks !
Dan
Good work, Thom.
However The Nice (and Yes) played two shows at The Festival Hall on February 7 1970, with Emerson playing Mike Vickers’ Moog. The concert was reviewed by Richard Green in the New Musical Express dated February 14. As far as I can see, this was Emerson’s first use of the Moog live, and according to the article at least, the Moog’s “first time on a British stage”.
Are you doing a 2017 calendar?
Hi Kris. We release a calendar every 2 years, so the next one will be in 2018!
Love the graphics! Somewhat reminiscent of the artwork from the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine (so very era-appropriate).
Totally hip and groovy, man!
THE logos look absolutely WONDERFUL a really good job. Are the available on t shirts or sseatshirts. All three logos?
Thank you, Dennis! We will have the new Bob Moog Foundation logo available on a t-shirt and a winter hat in about a week to 10 days. The other logos will follow soon thereafter!
Thank you, Hal! We’re really pleased with them as well, and we’re totally down with being hip and groovy!
Regarding the Monkees’ Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. album, the song Love Is Only Sleeping also has some Moog accompaniment in it.
Thanks for a great article!
How about Bill Purcell’s Our Winter Love? I believe a distorted bass guitar and saxophone were used to produce the Moog-like sounds on that piece.
Wow, Holmes looks just like Mills-Cockell ;D
This was a fascinating article, which gave a good insight into early uses of moog synthesizers, and it shows their transformation from gimmicky uses to more serious applications.
I’m surprised that Jazz musicians didn’t use Moogs on records first though?
Secondly, although a record may have a copyright date, the likelihood is that the music was actually recorded way before the release date. So I will stick my neck out and say that 1966 was a more likely year for some recordings???
I’m a distant relative
L relative of Davids, so remember that first Moog in his house in St. Petersburg Florida. I have been wondering! about David all these years and his association with Moog, very cool…Congratulations David.

How could you discuss film soundtracks and not mention A Clockwork Orange?! Or is that one a little too obvious? 🙂
There are a handful of people who have markedly influenced me, having been born in the 60s, I literally grew up with Keith’s music and without him and a very few others, I’d never have started playing keyboards or dabbling with a synth for the first time in 1975 as a wee lad in SoCal. Inspirational is the simplest, yet far inferior word for his impact on me. He will be missed, but always remembered.
Hello. In the description of the raffle, it’s wrotten: “The raffle, which is open internationally, closes at 11:59pm on Monday, April 3, 2017 or when all 7,500 tickets are sold, whichever comes first.”
The order number of the ticket which I have bought is higher than 7,500. Am I out of the participation in raffle?
Many thanks for your request.
You couldn’t swing a cat by the tail without hitting a Moog in the studio or concert!
Live that ax
Please
WANT
Nice..
Get the moooog outtttttt. My love
The most classic synth in the world. Happily will fund the cause for a chance to add this to our collection @ http://www.musicblip.com
Would be a wonderful tool for writing and creating music.
Ooh ooh me me pick me!
We had one of these in my brother’s store, and later, recording studio in Tallahassee, FL, when they first came out in the early ’70s! Here’s a song with me on the Mini and all the guitars, as well as engineering and mixing …

What a great time I had with THAT machine!

Awesome
I would have loved to buy raffle tickets for the MiniMoog Model D – especially since I lost my entire studio including 12 keyboards, (Mini Moog purchased in 1975, Hammond B3 etc), in Hurricane Sandy. Unfortunately I had some problems with identity theft this past Christmas on my credit card. I am just getting back to normal now. But because you can not accept PayPal. I still feel uncomfortable using my credit card – even though you have a secure website. It would have been nice to get my hands back on a MiniMoog though. I certainly miss it. Good luck with the raffle. Yours truly, Steve LaBattaglia
The best…
I remember a song I,m going down.Playing For Jan hammer and Jeff Beck…Simpy awesome.I wont “one”For playing this song…Everydays..
Not at all, Angel. The order number is automatically generated from our online store, it’s not the number that’s associated with your ticket in our database. You are definitely entered in the raffle. Good luck!
Thanks for your answer Michelle. My fingers are crossed. 🙂
I just revisited this page and the tribute by Michelle. In a crowded cafe in Santa Monica, tears just kept rolling from my eyes. (Strangers were asking me if I was ok. Lol)
Michelle understood Keith better than most people. And she truly understands how he was much more than a keyboard player or musician to me.
Her support, along with Moog Foundation, was invaluable to Keith and continues to be for the family and fans. Keith purely loved Dr. Moog…and he loved you too Michelle. Lotsaluv, Mari
To whomever reads this,
I was pleased to work for VanKoevering up and until the company had to close its doors. For me, David VanKoevering still remains on of the giants in the music industry.
I believe we made a lot of people happy with our devoted effort to promote the technology that at the time was definitely in a class by itself. I also believe that my opinion has validity because I also helped promote other great companies such as Yamaha, Kurzweil, Moog, Generalmusic and Solton. I found each to have it’s own signature appeal to a variety of buyers.
Thank you for allowing myself and others to put into print our glowing admiration for a wonderful human being…David VanKoevering.
I have been impressed by the Moog synthesizer since I first saw Keith Emerson play a B3 & as a pianist, I would love to have one of my own.
I also had the privilege of meeting Bob Moog when he worked with Keith Emerson.
I just got my ticket and thanks for offering this. It is a great cause.
I’m unable to enter, as ‘appt, suite etc’ seems to be a mandatory field – what should I enter here as I live in a single family home that doesn’t have an apartment or suite number etc…
I’ve still got #1752, the Memorymoog I bought new in 1984. I performed with it for years, but it hasn’t stayed in tune since 1997, so it sits in its case.
If I don’t win the raffle, maybe someday I’ll get around to sending it out for “meticulous servicing”!
Thanks!
Steve Brittenham
Grateful Minimoog & Memorymoog owner/player
I had an early pre-Midi, SN 1048, bought new Paid $4500 w/ Vol -Mod Pedal and an Anvil Case in 1984 from Hanich Music in LA. Loved the ‘Eminence Front’ Who patch. Had to sell when my 1st son was born. That thing was a Beast!
Going to enter for sure!
We have since fixed that problem. Suite or appt number are not optional, not required.
I too have worked with David Van Koevering. He is a kind and special person. The knowledge base he has is amazing! What a privilege to work with such an amazing man!
Remember when nobody wanted these? I recall seeing one for sale in the classifieds of the Birmingham (Alabama) News for $400 about twenty years ago. Wow. Wish I’d called that guy.
“The Winner will be selected at random and announced on Thursday, September 8, 2017”
But…, September 8, 2017 is Friday, isn’t that so?
Can’t wait to play with it……
Musik has the power to change the world
Yes, we are Moog-fans: We use an Voyager anniversary edition, all pedals, extension boards and Mooger-Foogers and a Moog-Guitar in our Sound-Studio and in the Progressive-Rock-Band BDM – Bacio Della Musa.
Love moogs since my Micro Moog
I am a guitarist/singer/composer with a small studio in upstate NY. Love the Moog Company, and have a little Moog arsenal of moogerfooger pedals, the LP stage II coupled with a slim, and the Mother-32. I’d love to win this polyphonic synth.
Classy and modern with a touch of nostalgia, a bit of whimsy and some science mixed in. Perfect! Congratulations to the foundation and the designer!
i wanna this!!!
so cool
I just got an email thanking me for my entry – it also said the drawing will be on April 5, 2017. Oops. I assume you meant September 5, 2017.
My confirmation email reads. That the winner will be “contacted via email on April 5, 2017. Good Luck!!”
Awesome for a good cause! Would love and cherish it if I were to win.
Wonderful cause! on the page where you enter the raffle, at the bottom it says “TICKETS ARE $25 EACH, 5 FOR $100 OR 12 FOR $200” but it looks like it’s 10 tickets for $200 when you try and buy them. Thanks!
Would love to win it !!! Keith Emerson was always will be my favorite keyboard player !!
This is such as great thing Moog is doing.I’ve been a synthesis since the mid 90s, my love for Moog products has only continued to grow over the years. Its awesome to see Moog giving back to this community and I’m glad to help by entering into this raffle. Thank you and good luck everyone.
Love music so much
I love moog. This synth is all I need to make epic records.
i was wondering about a ballpark figure /value on a moog phatty that says Bob Moog above the headphone jack… thank you..
September 8th is a Friday.
What a terrific opportunity to own such a historic piece of Moog electronics. Thank you.
Hello,
I didn’t know exactly the costs of winning… if I’m from Barcelona.. I have to pay federal taxes and the taxes in Spain too? What would be the amount aprox. of what i should have to pay in US?
Thanks!!!
Marc
Muy buen sinthetizador!!
Hi Michael — Thanks for letting us know — that was a mistake on our part. Hopefully you’ve received the eNewsletter correcting all of that information. The winner will be contacted on Friday, September 8th.
Thanks for letting us know — that reply was automated and unfortunately hadn’t been updated since our last raffle. The Memorymoog Plus raffle ends on September 6th this year, and the winner will be announced on September 8th. Hopefully you’ve already received the email with that correct information. Thanks for entering and good luck!!
Hi Marc, Sorry but we aren’t familiar with the costs for each country. The only cost you’ll have in the US is your shipping cost. Thanks!
Thank, Chris! We got ahead of ourselves! That is now corrected!
We’re not sure, Gwen. Best to poke around eBay to get and idea of that!
Hi Andy. Thanks for letting us know. That has been corrected!
Lee- thank you for sharing that story and for supporting the cause with your donation. I too have a long relationship with the MemoryMoog going back to selling mine in the 90s and still missing it regularly 🙂
I went to moogfest in 2014 and bought the store demo model of the Voyager XL; I have been in love with my Voyager ever since then. I have owned several Moogs throughout the years but the Voyager so far has been my favorite. I was fortunate to meet Robert Moog in 1973, and Keith Emerson in 2014. I have also been fortunate enough to use a Moog modular with a couple of sequencers when I was going to college in North Texas State University. Moog is one of the most awesome synthesizer companies in the world. I look forward to owning the memory Moog and producing an entire record using just the memory Moog and the Voyager XL I think that would be phenomenal!
Great story and a great “pay it forward”.
Huge fan of Memory moog, never won raffle drawings this could be the first time. fingers crossed. Splendid possibilities. incredible adventures, and endless studio muscle.
Congratulations Vincent! Enjoy it!
Gutted that it isnt mine, but congrats to the winner!
I normally dont even enter things like this but I’m happy knowing my entry contributed to a worthy organization.

Great the hear about this from Wes’ perspective….the gift that keeps on giving ! Thanks for posting this and Thanks to Wes for his generosity! All the best! Lee
Thanks for the detailed breakdown of your creative process. I will share this with my son Evan who is a Freshman graphic design major at Purchase College. There are very valuable lessons here for all students!
Sweet!
What a fascinating look and rembrance of the evolution of early synthesis. Subotnicks Silver Applesof the Moon is a testament to the diversity of timbres that the Buchla synthesizer was capable of.
So looking forward to viewing this documentary! It is going to be epic!
I’m really pleased that you managed to speak to Rick. I found that he’s such a humble person and a great wit.
what a truly, wonderfully incredible experience you all must have had, with gorgeous scenery and rich history in the story telling.
can’t wait for the movie!
I love it…
Wakeman and his work with Yes especially on the album “close to the edge” has forever etched him an inspirational spot as one of the top keyboard players of all time, if not THE quintessential player for generations to come.
Hello, I worked with Walter at Fine Recording way back when with an engineer Russ Hamn and then Fine Recording folded and Walter created Sear Sound and sure glad he did ! A couple bands I was in spent some time working and recording with Walter and Russ as Engineers at Sear Sound and what Wonderful memories in my life those times were. The bands were Sinbad, Pleasant Dreams and Andromeda. Some of our sound was also used on a movie The Tenement (credited as Alex Futter). Was heartbroken when the news of Walter was heard 🙁 Anyway, just a few comments to recall a Friend that I shared some of our life’s moments at one time
I got my ticket and am ready to win it! 🙂 Great cause!
Wes, I was really moved that you have the love and ability for this amazing instrument. I purchased a new memory moog plus in early 1980s and still own it. It has never been out of my home studio except for one time I was contacted by the keyboardist for John Parr when they were playing in town for a concert if he could borrow mine due to issues with his. The camaraderie of fellow keyboard players in indeed unique. The only thing I have misplaced over the years is my user manual. My moog plus works well and I don’t use it often but it was gratifying to hear that people like you are around. Thanks Wes.
A cause worth supporting.
Thank you.
Where will the winner be announced?
We were having some issues with our website at the time of the announcement, so it was announced on three social media streams. The winner was Brian Combs of Portland, OR.
Yes, it was. Brian Combs of Portland, OR won the Minimoog.
Michelle, hoping that peace, love and the wonderful memories of your mother keep you and your family in a warm embrace. What an amazing set of parents you were blessed with and what an amazing child they had in you. Sending you love and hugs!
It doth appear you were meant to possess a Memory Moog. Wow. It took long enough. I’m sighing as I hear in my mind’s ear full, lush Moog chords. Congratulations to all for how this has worked out.
Great tribute and article. Thanks for sharing the story of Shirleigh Moog.
Prayers for the Moog family.
Lovely Lady! Thank you for the tribute to her so well deserved!
Met Shirley when we bought a house down the street in Natick in 1984. She was the perfect realtor with a ‘welcome package’ about Natick’s history and the neighborhood spread out on the hall table of the house we bought.
The Moog’s found out I had built a Theremin from an old Electronics magazine article and invited us to dinner. Got to meet Bob and have a pleasant evening / welcome to the neighborhood.
Will always remember her skill and kindness and Bob’s sense of humor.
And we have her first cookbook and it has many worn pages!
When will the last day be that the current Moog store will be open?
Hi Michael. The Bob Moog Foundation is completely and totally separate from the corporation Moog Music, Inc. The Moogseum is a project of the Bob Moog Foundation, not the company. Nothing at the company will change. The Moog Store will remain where it is. The Moogseum will open a few blocks away in 2019.
How shall we pronounce this?
Mogue-zee-um
What a wonderful tribute to the woman behind Bob Moog’s success!
It does get any better than Moog! A lifetime of creativity!!
Moog is Love. So glad they exist!!! Cheers to them.
I enter every time to help the foundation! Winning would be a plus! Awesome prizes.
Can I win?
Yes! Just enter here: http://bit.ly/MoogTrifectaRaffle!
Moog me asap (please?)
Interesting! I own a Moog Liberation and the front looks quite like the Moog Rogue…
Would go great with my new Fender Guitar.
I learned electonic music at the Long Beach City College in California. They had two large modular Moons like Keith Emerson’s and mini Moogs two.
The best!
It would be so cool to win
is it a bird, is it a plane, no wait, no, no – its super moog
I had the honor (and pleasure) of working on the Moog’s Leicester house for many months, with the family already moved in. There are few construction projects I remember so fondly. Shirley and Bob weren’t like clients, they were friends, as were all their children. The only downside was that every afternoon Shirleigh would start preparing dinner for the family, and the aromas would drive me crazy. The woman could cook. She was a warm and caring woman who made the crew feel like family. Thank you, Michelle for the warm and loving tribute to your mother. How lucky you were to have two incredible parents. Please give my best to your brother and sisters.
I like me some moog
Awww man it would be soooooo nice!
Would be so cool to have a Moog!
Will be nice to win any of these
I have been a moog fan since their inception!
The best inspiration source…
Moog makes me happy!!!
Oh Jesus won’t you get me a beautiful Moog. My friends all own Korg synths and Roland Boutiques Oh Jesus won’t you get me a Moog. It would put me in such a fugue
Amen
Oh, bendy currents of crackling honey. Sell me a diamond and take all my money.
Moog is in vogue for this Rogue-craving pogue
Did you guys are the winners of the raffle yet?
Hi,
I purchased a ticket on October 29th, but I didn’t received the email with the link, so I cannot attend… I am very frustrated.
